IL019 SPHINX Softened - 100% Linen - Middle (5.3 oz/yd2)
A vibrant dark teal shade that makes you wonder if it's blue or green. SPHINX linen's
exotic jewel tone unfurls across Inka Essenhigh's evocative paintings,
investing sublime oceanic depths or mysterious forests with a haunting,
glowing aura. Fantastically surreal, her exquisitely detailed,
atmospheric scenes collapse together natural and synthetic worlds,
conveying lush, fervent landscapes populated by sprites and fairies,
scenes painted with supernatural colours and the emanating light of the
cinema screen.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces, this 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

It washed up beautifully with a bit of lint, just to be sure I washed it again. Color still vibrant and the texture is gorgeous! I never buy linen from anyone else!
Prompt delivery on my order. Great price. Beautiful color. Color and weight perfect for fall. Really softened up when I pre-washed it. Wonderful to sew with. I look forward to ordering more in the future.
The most beautiful, rich teal. I made a throw blanket and am planning a blouse with the leftovers. Please bring this color back. :)
Stunning color, true to appearance on monitor. Made myself a nursing friendly dress in three hours. World's easiest fabric to work with! Just crazy about it.
This color is so aptly named..is it blue, is it green? Entirely depends on pairing color, more green with navy, more blue with forest but perfect with either. Purchased 2 yards and made the Nola pattern in 10. Not a great fit for me (arms too tight--my fault, in effort to reduce raw edges [no serger] I did French seams and did not take the time to analyse the sleeve ease). I gave it to my slender daughter-in-law, she loves it. Bonus, left over fabric makes lovely napkins! I ordered more fabric for me :).
I am really glad that I ordered this fabric. The texture is luxurious and it works well for an everyday dress. I found the colour to be a bit more vibrant than the photo, more like a jewel-tone, but it's absolutely lovely and saturated, so I don't mind at all. Great buy!
I haven't made anything yet with this fabric but I love it already. I will make shorts and a top from the Riva Pattern. All the colors I bought in the past have made wonderful skirts but have not made any tops. I am sure the top will make up as well as the skirts. I love the Riva Patterns, just perfect for me.
I like the color but when soaking it the water turns very dark. I'm afraid of washing the garment when I need to do it.
Hello thanks for your feedback, we've found any dye usually gets washed away after the first pre-wash. If you are worried about the dye running after the first wash you can do a simple test to check the dye's 'fastness'. We have a great article about this in our Help Center: support.fabrics-store.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058915711-Home-Remedies-for-Stopping-Dye-Run-Leaching-
It came quickly. Haven't sewed it yet but washed it 3-4 times as one reviewer suggested. Can't wait to sew it
I LOVE this color. I made a t-shirt first that now I want to wear everyday. Now I want to make everything else; I may buy more:) In general I've gotten so much pleasure from all the different linens I've purchased from fabrics-store. Sewing has become a solace and a great creative past time during the pandemic - and the constant barrage of marketing emails actually something I enjoy. Thank you for great products, prices, inspirations and service. Also, thank you for the focused offering - not all the fabrics in the world, just a great and varied range of linens. I've sewed up a few of the free patterns - also great.
A message to Laurel...I love your quilt you made out of linen! It is very beautiful and makes me want to sew one myself! Thanks for sharing the photo!
I made a Tina Givens "Girl" dress from this and it was fabulous to work with! I wash my linen as many times as I can, 4-5 times, if I can handle waiting that long to dig into my project. At the very least, I wash them twice. Linen by nature is linty. I think the word lint is rooted in the word linen, if I'm not mistaken. I am gladly willing to wade through the inch-thick dryer vent of lint (for the first 4-6 times) for this incredible fabric! I won't use anything but fabric's store linen for all my makes (addict here.) The color is a rich and delicious teal. Some of the IL019 are so incredibly soft after a couple washes, they are like a high-quality broken-in flannel and it feels like wearing a cozy blanket. This is one of those super soft IL019's and I will be using it for many more makes.
I just finished my Calif. King sheet set with pillowcases yesterday and put them on my bed....perfection! I love love love this color so much and actually have my bedroom walls painted the same color above off-white wainscoting... the walls and sheets look wonderful together. Linen has changed my life this year and I am grateful to Fabrics-Store.com for all the incredible fabrics they sell...thank you very much! We have packed up all our cotton sheet sets and terrycloth towels, and using only linen instead. Never going back to that stuff and will most likely end up giving the cotton sheets to the thrift store as they are still quite usable. Linen is an incredible fabric and I adore it!! SO addicted to LINEN!!!
I am currently hand quilting a 60 x 60 whole cloth throw quilt with white sashiko thread out of this and love it so much...the color is incredibly beautiful and puts me in a happy place. Now that I have mastered making bed sheets this week thanks to the pattern here on the site, I have ordered a bolt to make a second set of sheets for our beds. Lovely!!! Thank you Fabrics-Store, for the incredible choices of linens, all at a decent price. I am so glad I found this website.
My earlier review was for the IL20 3.5 oz linen, which is lovely. I used this 5.3 oz to make a reversible dress (Metamorphic dress, pattern by Sew Liberated) for my daughter. She loves it.
This fabric is a perfect weight for double layer or reversible garments. Because of the finer weave, it is drapier than the 5.3 oz. I made a Metamorphic dress (pattern by Sew Liberated) and I adore it. A single layer of this probably needs a lining or slip for a skirt, but not necessarily for shirt, in my opinion.
Absolutely love Sphinx for our Ring Sling collection inspired by the emerald coast! It's perfectly soft and vibrant in color!
From the pictures on my monitor, I was expecting the color to be a fairly bright blue-green or teal. In reality it is a very dark more-blue-than-green and a bit dull. I have some Verdant Green which is brighter than this Sphinx, and some dark blue which is very nearly the same color as the Sphinx. It is the usual excellent FS quality.
I love the color of the fabric. As described it is a dark blue green. The quality is also very good. There are a few slubs but not any more than other linen I have bought. It holds a crease very well. I made a dress and plan to use the rest for a blouse with origami style pleating on the color.
This color is so lovely, and still subtle that I find myself wanting to make it up into more and more things. So far I've made it into a Vogue pattern that is all the rage right now and a medieval kirtle. I only have taken phone pictures of the kirtle and they didn't turn out very good, the color is off and they aren't focused well. I'm still getting the hang of the thing. I'll up load it anyway until I get something better. This is a dream to sew with, and the whole thing is hand stitched and re-stitched. The seams were sewn, then either flat felled or turned and stitched down on each side of the seam. Those seams were then "guarded" which means embroidered over to protect them from wear. This meant sewing each seam up to 4 times, depending on how many colors I used to guard them. It is so easy to work with, that it was not a problem to do the extra sewing. Since I had some "Pale Green" in IL020 scraps, I used them as applique trim I then embroidered too.
I absolutely, positively love this color! Very true to the color on my screen and truly gorgeous. The fabric is really nice, stays straight and the color is clear - even after repeated washings. I've used it for clothing, pillows and thinking about making duvet covers. I'll be buying more of this.
This is a color, well, I can't get enough of it. So far I've made a Marcie Tilton Vogue dress from it, used the scraps to complete and trim a ginger tunic, have plans for a kirtle (won't that be gorgeous!) and I MUST have a shirt jacket from it too. The list goes on and on. The odd thing is that it is so much fun to sew that I have made all these things by hand. Not something I would normally do for the 21st Century things.
This linen is heaven to sleep under. This is the fourth duvet and pillow cases set I've made from your linen. What causes me to want to review this linen is the color. I spread the fabric on my bed and lay down for a nap. The sensation was delicious. The color made me dream of being held with the greatest tenderness in a dream of ancient Egypt. Very Nilotic, like the richest glaze on tiles, like the river that nourishes. As ever, a dream to work with. Watch out for dark lint until it's been washed a few times. Thanks for showing me how sensitive I am to color.

Like the richness of the teal. Looks great with auburn hair and pale skin.
I bought this to make a table runner for my daughter. The color is a little darker/more muted, but it worked perfectly for me. You can't really count on the image on your screen to reflect the true color. This linen was a delight to work with. I'd say wash it more than once to alleviate some of the lint issue. I also bought a yard of natural, and was totally thrilled with the color! I can see sewing with more and more linen in my future!
The color isn't as turquoise as it appears on my iMac screen but more dark and muted. It's a bit too muddy for my pale skin tone. Pairing this with the beautiful 'mulberry' would be lovely. I love the color blocked dress shown using this and two other colors. My plan is to make kitchen towels with this fabric and the color will be perfect to hide stains but still work well in our seaside home. Overall I'm happy with my purchase as I've been with all of the linen I've purchased on this site.
The doggie bag cuts seem to be quite generous. I used 1/2 yard cuts of sphinx, ceramic and meadow to make a colour blocked dress for my 7 year old. The 019 weight is perfect -- not sheer but light enough to be cool in the hot weather! I tried to add a picture but wasnt't able to. Here's a link: mel-mel-o.blogspot.ca/2012/06/linen-twirly-dress

I'm extremely passionate about all things ‘fiber'. I love to utilize natural and second-hand fabrics in my sewing when possible and I also sell second-hand fabric through Instagram (shopwellfibre). I'm SO happy to have a great pair of quality practical shorts to mix in my summer wardrobe! These shorts are are the teal shorts are a soon-to-be-released pattern by Megan Nielsen Patterns. I need something non-restrictive and breezy (chasing kids is sweaty work, let me tell ya). As much as I love jean shorts, they aren't the best fit.
Fabric colours are sphinx and warm olive, and the design is an original vintage 1959 Vogue pattern. The dress is fully lined with concealed front pockets, invisible zip, vintage buttons and removable cuffs - a bit of a challenge I must say but well worth the effort. The fabric is just lovely to wear and the colours work beautifully together!
