NINE IRON linen's steely, dramatic grey with just a hint of crimson became great swathes of deep shadow in the hands of the painter Thomas Cole, sweeping across America's epic mountain ranges and forming wild, turbulent skies laden with thunderstorms.

His momentous landscapes are a celebration of America's sublime wilderness during the mid-19th century, before industrialization took over, invoking the unstoppable force of this overwhelmingly vast terrain.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces, this 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Luxury fabric in a restful color
Reviewer: Yosa

I made a dress out of this in just a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. It simply wants to be sewn into beautiful things. The signature finish makes the fabric feel like it has been your favorite for years, and (even after being shoved in a backpack for airline travel) wrinkles relax out into softness after a few minutes of wear. This color is really marvelous. It is a soft, deep grey, like calligraphy ink with a bit of water on a zen painting.

Medium-to dark grey
Reviewer: Jean

This versatile dark shade of grey works with many colors. Most of my palette leans on the warm side of browns, russets and gold. This shade of grey works well with a variety of colors. I just wish it came in the heavier 4C22.

You say your fabric is addictive; I say that, if so, it is a positive addiction. The quality is exactly what I hoped to find, and that doesn't happen very often. I really do love this linen.

The perfect Grey
Reviewer: Loretta

I love the many colors of grey, it is my favorite color with so many moods, and most shades will work with just about any color.. The Nine Iron has now become my favorite deep grey, with a hint of crimson rather than blue. I have paired it with both warm and cool colors, and it works beautifully. IL019 is the perfect all purpose linen, and an amazing hand. FS always provides quality linen products and price, excellent customer service and fast shipping.

Great alternative to black!
Reviewer: Sara

If you love black, but it makes you look too pale, this is a great choice! It's a gentler almost-black, and of course it's as soft and user-friendly as all the other IL019 fabrics.

The Favorite
Reviewer: Anonymous

Imagine if you were limited to only one fabric to sew with, live with, use and wear for the rest of your life. Nine Iron Softened would be the one I would choose. The feel of the fabric is sublime. The color is perfect. I could never tire looking at it. It is the most perfect shade of deep charcoal gray and it loves and plays well with every other color that I've put it next to.

The color is just gorgeous. I was looking for the darkest gray linen I could find, and this is exactly what I was hoping for. My monitor even matches the color IRL :) The quality is lovely, too. 10/10 would recommend!

This is a beautiful cool dark charcoal color that looks amazing with purple and blue. I liked my sample so much, I bought 12 yards of it for various reenacting projects.

Reviewer: Suzanne

It's dark grey, with blue. Washes up beautifully and is so soft. I can't wait to sew my tunic wit it. And I know I will be buying more to make pants. Such a lovely color and weight.

This color is amazing! Slightly black, slightly the darkest blue, slightly deepest purple. It is a showstopper. My husband begged me to order more for a shirt for him!

Impressive Quality
Reviewer: Anonymous

Just as described, this is a beautiful dark gray that leans ever so slightly to indigo. Compared to the image on my monitor, the fabric is a little cooler (no red tones), and a little lighter but still very dark. This is my first order and what really impresses me is the quality of the fabric! I have another piece of linen that I bought at my local fabric shop, and after washing, there is no comparison. The Fabrics-Store linen is so far superior. It's much softer with a lovely drape and not itchy at all. The weight is perfect. Highly recommend!

Beautiful Color

Just purchased two larger pieces (1 yard, 1.5 yards) from the doggie bag, and the color is really nice. Think the darkest blue possible without being totally black. Stunning!

Reviewer: Vickie

I just received my order of Nine Iron and I love this new fresh grey. If you are a lover of any of Fabric-Stores grey colors you will love this new color. This is a very intense deep color, my monitor was accurate for this, but cannot show the richness and depth of this color. I just don't have the words, try this and see for yourself. This is really fresh and new and a great substitute for black. As always the quality is excellent and shipping fast. I will wash and dry as I normally do for linen and can't wait to see the results of what I make, will post a picture when my project is complete. Thanks for another beautiful linen!

Here is a close up to show the texture and color of Nine Iron linen. This was taken outside in an overcast day. It is just the right fabric for a garment to wear for years.

I love this linen....the weight the color, the softness. I use it for my punch needle pillows and aprons.

This is a medium-dark grey that works with cool and warm colors. The pants are the Alexandra Moroccan pants. The top is from Paper Theory.

Over the years I have loved using FS linen to make ring slings, pillow covers, and clothing. This time I chose to make a linen romper from a 90's retro pattern. I love sewing vintage patterns for my girls and I had fun sewing something for myself. I grew up in the 90's, so this style of romper is very nostalgic for me. It's a roomy silhouette that can be cinched at the waist with the tie. This romper is very versatile and comfortable for my mom life. Linen is perfect for Las Vegas where it stays hot/warm most of the year.

If the devil is in the details, an accurately installed zipper can give a handmade garment a professional finish. And when it comes to sewing zippers, the invisible zipper is the easiest one to insert. As its name suggests, an invisible zipper is a zipper that lies hidden in the seam with no machine stitching visible from the right side of the garment. So you don't need to worry about perfect topstitching as all the action is happening behind the scenes. This is one of the primary reasons why invisible zippers are so popular and look so professional. Invisible zippers can be found on a variety of projects, from garments to home furnishings. They are top pick for close-fitted garments such as dresses, tops, skirts and pants.
