NINE IRON linen's steely, dramatic grey with just a hint of crimson became great swathes of deep shadow in the hands of the painter Thomas Cole, sweeping across America's epic mountain ranges and forming wild, turbulent skies laden with thunderstorms.

His momentous landscapes are a celebration of America's sublime wilderness during the mid-19th century, before industrialization took over, invoking the unstoppable force of this overwhelmingly vast terrain.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces, this 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.
As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

Such a high class fabric!
Reviewer: Yosa

I made a dress out of this in just a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. It simply wants to be sewn into beautiful things. The signature finish makes the fabric feel like it has been your favorite for years, and (even after being shoved in a backpack for airline travel) wrinkles relax out into softness after a few minutes of wear. This color is really marvelous. It is a soft, deep grey, like calligraphy ink with a bit of water on a zen painting.

Sleep softly with new sheets
Reviewer: Susan

I made new sheets for our bed that compliments our blanket and quilt. After several pre-washes I hemmed both raw edges and kept the selvages intact at the sides. It's getting softer with use and I expect it will get even softer as it gets used and washed. I have this linen in a different color that I made into a nightgown and I love it.

I frequently purchase this in 10 yard increments for aprons I make for my business. This time, upon pre washing as I usually do with no soap, in cold water, the linen came out with lavender blotches throughout the entire 10 yards. I'm so disappointed. I've never had any problems with any of the hundreds of yards I've purchased over the years.

Julie profile image Stunning alternative to black
Reviewer: Julie

I've used this linen for two years now on the Japanese style aprons I sell. I've never had issues with color fading or going blotchy as another reviewer did. The color is a deep slate and very classic looking in garments or accessories. I prefer it to black. See my aprons here:

Fabulous fabric!
Reviewer: Sandra

Unlike the previous review, I had no strange blotchy color change or odd odor. The color did fade during a warm wash, cold rinse and warm dry - but I want it to not bleed and shrink after my garment is made. It is SO soft and I think I will make a slip - something to be worn close to the skin.

Faded blotchy pink when prewashed
Reviewer: Heather

The first wash, pre-washing to get the odd smell (I guess the signature finish) out, it faded blotchy pink. I've never had this happen before with FS linen and I"m very upset.

Hello Heather - I want to thank you again for taking the time to work with us on this matter to make sure that we do not have any issues like this going forward. First as mentioned to you in my email, your replacement linen is on the way and should arrive any day along with the return label for you to send back the damaged linen so we can replicate the pre-wash steps you took to see if we can figure out what happened. Since the softener we use for our F|S Signature Finish is odorless we were concerned about the smell you mentioned so we pulled several rolls of the various colors that have in this finish and thankfully we detected no odor. In the past when our linen has arrived with an odd smell, more often than not our linen was exposed to an odor in transit. We have asked our carriers to be more careful when transporting our linen as fabric tends to absorb and hold smells more so than other items being shipped. Once we receive the linen we will be in touch to let you know what we were able to find out and appreciate you letting us replace the linen.

This weight pleats and swishes for the skirt and with two layers the bodice has perfect structure. I love sewing this and it irons beautiful but can also come out of the dryer a little damp and hang to look fairly nice without.

Here is a close up to show the texture and color of Nine Iron linen. This was taken outside in an overcast day. It is just the right fabric for a garment to wear for years. The color is restful, and luxurious.
