4C22 MIX NATURAL Softened - 100% Linen - Heavy (7.1 oz/yd2)
At a heavier weight of 7.1 ounces this 100% linen is referred to as Rustic due to its more textured look and feel. Durable and perfect for projects that require just a bit more substance.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Love the linen
I am fairly new to linen and have decided I love this weight for aprons (which I make a lot of). I have recently ordered natural that wasn't softened, and have decided I like the softened better. This was a dream to sew with once I got it squared up. The mix in the natural adds some interest. I have already ordered more. Can't wait to embroider on it!
I love the look and weight of this natural linen. It feels like spring has come indoors. For a test piece, to establish fabric shrinkage and performance, I made an Easter tablecloth. Before working on it I dipped the fabric in water and let it air dry. The shrinkage was roughly 5%. The embroidery was done over a single layer wash away stabilizer utilizing poly embroidery thread with a 5 pass bean stitch. The fabric supports the tension of the embroidery beautifully without pulling the treads out of position. The edge finish, a simple scalloped edge, was supported the same way. For the embroidery, I used Embrilliance software "Stitch Artist - level 3" for the design on my Mac and a Bernina 880 sewing machine for the stitching. I think the weight of this fabric is also suitable for pants, skirts and/or a suite jacket. I would not make a summer shirt out of it. The natural slubs were fine prior to washing but some very rough slubs looked pretty bad afterwards. The fabric was ironed afterwards which settled them back down.
I purchased 5 yards to make roman blinds. When I opened the package, I was just amazed at the quality and heft of the linen. So few fabrics live up to the description these days, but this fabric does! It was crisp before washing and soft after the first wash. Yes, it did shrink, but it's within the limits in the product description. LOTS of dryer lint. And after machine drying, it really did not wrinkle as I expected. I washed a second time, less lint, still no wrinkling and less shrinkage. One more to go! By the way, the fabric has VERY straight grain, which is perfect for my blinds.
I was so pleased to receive my 10 yards of linen in such a timely fashion. Not sure what I'll make yet, probably garments. I'm looking forward to working with this gorgeous fabric.
Purchased to make a bed skirt ... quality and price exceeded expectations!
This fabric is perfect for home decor projects. I needed pillows for a new couch and originally thought I would make plain pillows from my stash of this fabric. Then I had an idea to use the oak leaves on our property to print a design for the front side of my pillows. I scattered the leaves on the fabric, then sprayed over them to get my design. I can see using this fabric for many more projects.
I have ordered linen yardage twice. The first bunch became aprons, one cross back, and two smaller ones from the leftovers. They all turned out great. The second order became four linen bath towels and two hand towels. They dry us quite nicely, and then they dry themselves on the towel bar much faster than terry towels. Yes, they look rumply , but that is linen texture. Traditional, right? I am looking forward to making a shirt in the future.
Sheets, Sheets, Sheets!!! Soft and Wonderful! Breathable! No musty, clamy, cotton that never really dries! I have 4C22 Natural Softened as a bottom sheet, and 4C22 Mix Natural Softened as a top sheet. I didn't even need to sew anything: just zig-zagged ends. Left the Selvege. On both top and bottom sheets. Tucked bottom in at head and foot. Made top sheet ample in length. Voila! Done! Its a Full Size bed. It is absolutely a Dream! TY FS.com!!!!!
Using this linen for aprons. Absolutely love the feel and weight of this linen. Washes up super soft and has that lovely movement of a heavy linen. So happy to have found my new source of linen supply. Also, never have met a company who responds so quickly to a purchase. It is usually just days between ordering and receiving what I have ordered. Super happy with this company.
I just love the color of the natural mix. It has become my favorite color. This is a more rustic linen. Very utilitarian and durable.
I ordered 1/3 of a yard of this fabric from the doggie bag to try it out. I made a cute bread bag with an outside tie from a piece of cotton twill tape that was used as packaging on something I once bought. My trendy bag cost me less than $1.00. It has s just waiting for a little sourdough loaf. Pretty sure I will need more kitchen accessories to match. I really need new kitchen chair cushions ......
I purchased a bolt of "mix natural, softened" to make curtains for our living room. I have used this same fabric to make curtains for almost all the windows in our house. The curtains are simple, floor length, and hung with clip rings but the beautiful linen is what makes them something special. It is classy fabric that is a dream to work with. I love linen!
I ordered 15 yards and washed and dried it twice just as it came. If you know what you want to make with it, I suggest cutting to the length you need plus a bit for shrinkage before washing because it twists in the dryer with such a long piece which creates wrinkles that must be ironed prior to cutting. Shorter lengths probably wouldn't need to be ironed . It also creates A LOT of lint, so clean the lint screen every 15 minutes or so. I made 8 double layer bath towels (50x25), 4 double layer hand towels (25x15), and have 4 approximately 11x11 pieces for embroidery. The towels are lovely and absorbent and come out of the dryer wrinkle-free. They take up little room and dry quickly. I am certain they will last much longer than my terrycloth towels. The fabric is also wonderful for embroidery. I will post photos.
Rustic, Natural, Beautiful! Planning a Wrap Skirt for ease and fit. Some Tops with Sheer Organza Collar to Hopefully complete the Natural Rustic, Easy Wear Look that is so Wonderful to live in! Will post when done! Love Fabrics-store.com Linens!!! Thank you, Affordable too!!!
I just made a lovely French styled waiter apron yesterday out of this fabric and only used one yard! So pleased with the outcome. Washed and dried the fabric prior to cutting out the pattern...but really did not see any noticeable shrinkage.
I made a simple dress with this fabric -- rave reviews from family and friends, and it's delightful to wear. It was also very easy fabric to work -- I'll be buying more! I can think of a zillion things it will be perfect for.
My daughter-in-law and I buy fresh milk from a dairy farm, which means carrying glass bottles back and forth. This fabric was perfect for machine embroidering cute cow faces, and was as easy to sew as it was to cut and measure. The fabric is sturdy, yet lightweight. (I wish I could upload a picture--I am so very pleased with the results!)
When this came in the mail I was so excited when I opened the package and layed my eyes on this fabric for the first time! It's so rustic and unique. The pictures just can't do it justice. The color and weave is absolutely beautiful! I will be purchasing more of this for sure!
I received this linen purchase in good time, as usual, and washed it right away. This fabric has the most beautiful drape, flow, color and feel, that I'd like to wear something made of it every day. Many people use it for home decor projects, which is wonderful, but I have to wear it. It reminds me of the ancients, and fabrics that they must have had. So beautiful; definitely worth trying.
This was my first purchase from Fabrics Store and I was shocked at how fast it arrived. I ordered a few 1 yd remnants from the Doggie Bag just to get a feel for the fabric. I made a bath towel out if this particular cut and I love it so much. It is a perfect natural color and is super absorbent. The texture is slightly rough but I really like that and it almost exfoliates as it dries you. I pre-washed the fabric in hot water and dried on high heat twice to get rid of all the lint and let it shrink a bit, and this softened up the fabric a good amount too. I ended up immediately purchasing more fabric to make more towels!
I love the C22 heavyweights and have sewn on the natural and at least five colors. The Mix Softened has a very different, much rougher feel than any of the others. While beautiful in color and texture, it is not suitable for anything against the skin, such as apron straps, skirts, or pillows that will be touched. I wish it had been given a different category that made this clear prior to purchase, as a sample swatch was insufficient to fully appreciate the difference between this fabric and the others with the same designation.
Just after one wash the fabric softened up nicely. I wasn't sure the I was going to like the rustic look of the brown fabric but it does have a nice appeal in person. I'm using 1 yard to make a bath towel and if it works well I'll get more to replace all of my old cotton towels. Already I have high hopes and have ordered some more to make napkins.
I made a set of bath towels for my sister. She loves them! As with all of the linen I have purchased from this site, it is just fantastic fabric to work with. I prefer the softened or signature finish because both come out of the dryer so soft, even the heavy weight linen.
Strange bluish blotches appeared after washing this linen. First time this happened and I have bought many yards over the years
The color is just what I was looking for in my project, slubs &all. It needles well too. It will give a warm weight to this quilt the client was looking for , comfort all around.
I purchased this to mark drapes. I love the way this linen feels and it is a good weight for my purpose. I actually bought 35 yards the price was so good. Yes I am making multiple sets of drapes!
Mix-natural thick fabric was used to cover sofa and loveseat (4C22). The results were astonishing and I was so pleased with easy of fabric and strength of fabric.. I bought more for curtains.
Ii was very happy with the very prompt delvery of my linen and pattern . The linen is very soft and the beige color is also a soft crisp tone which will make a beautiful garment once I decide on which one to settle on .
Bought a large cut of this to try make a few different things. My husband told me there was no way I could make a pair of cropped linen pants that wouldn't look like a bag on him. So far this linen is just the thing- thick like a light jean and doesn't really wrinkle like the lightweight linens most pants are made with. It arrives looking very different than after it's been prewashed. Be careful with choosing a layout; I think it's about a 5% shrinkage on the width. I measured before and after and it's 59" before washing and 56" minus selvage after.
I'm embarrassed to say (and don't want to add up) how many yards of this fabric I've ordered. If I start getting low, I order more. It's the perfect neutral for absolutely EVERYTHING and makes up beautifully. This is my favorite weight of all the linens, as it has a good weight to it and doesn't wrinkle as much as the lighter weights (although still wrinkles, as linen should).
FS linen never fails to impress me. I have made quite a few projects out of the lighter weight 5.3oz linen and absolutely love it. I wanted to make a heavier weight linen jumpsuit for winter so I thought I would test out the 7.1oz and it is gorgeous. While heavier weight, it still has a lovely drape and breathes nicely. I hand paint my fabric before sewing and with this fabric, the paint didn't bleed through, which it can do on the 5.3 oz. I do recommend washing fabric before sewing (as you should always do anyway).
I used a favorite vest I own, carefully laying it out on paper. I used a measuring tape a LOT to get the right fit. I own a Brother Serger and this made for excellent seam control; and then I reinforced with a straight stitch. I tweaked the look using a plain muslin for the trim and one side of the collar.
First time to purchase this particular Linen. Will make nice napkins or towels.
I do a lot of sewing and love to use linen. I use the rustic to line the handbags that I make, the color seems to work with most other colors and the fabric holds up so well as a lining. I also make kitchen and bath towels with it. I gave up terry cloth towels and the musty smell they get after being wet and will never go back! I have also made clothing with the rustic linen and I've been very happy with the results.
I knew when I ordered that I would love this fabric, and I absolutely do!! Taking the advice of other reviews, I washed the fabric 3 times in HOT water, and dried it on the highest heat. I took measurements before and after each wash/dry to calculate the amount of shrinkage - I knew that would be of interest to most others reading the reviews. I first serged the cut edges before washing to avoid any fraying. The fabric shrunk the most during the first wash/dry losing 3" in width from 60" down to the expected 57". The length shrunk from 57" to 54". The width remained at 57" for all other wash/dry. But, the length continued to shrink. In the 2nd wash/dry, the 54" shrunk further to 52" and after the 3rd, it shrunk to 51. Overall, that would imply approximately 10% shrinkage. For my use, I will not need to worry about further shrinkage, but I expect for clothing or any item requiring ongoing laundering, you should expect further shrinkage.
I love this fabric! I made throw blankets with it, complete with fringed edges. It's the perfect weight and softness!
Amazing color and quality! I washed and dried it a few times and it is already quite soft. I think the mixed 4c22 is my new favorite linen!
I love this linen, the color is beautiful- not a grey but not khaki, right in between somewhere and very vertatile. Using if for a slipcover for sofa and chair. Would definitely recommend.
I purchased eight yards of this linen to make crib skirts for my twins' cribs. It's a good thing I didn't intend this for a garment! The weave is full of little twig-like burrs, like bits of hard, dry grass that somehow got woven in. This is consistent across the eight yards. After three washings, the fabric is still very rough, like the texture of a canvas painter's tarp. I really like IL019, but I will hesitate before buying 4C22 again.
I purchased this fabric because of the thread colour blend, and because of previous reviews. It did not disappoint. Love it.
If you are looking for the most natural look on linen colors , this is it, Is a mix of flax and oatmeal, and the weight is prefect.
I have used a great deal of this linen, as well as the slightly heavier IL 090 almost exclusively for slipcovers for my home and for my job. I prewash and dry it and it comes out of the dryer gorgeous ...soft and nearly wrinkle free, but with lots of texture which gives it an earthy look. The mix/natural is quite a bit lighter in color than the plain natural, which I have also used...I like it better. There is a huge amount of lint from the first washing and dryng, but it nearly dsappears in subsequent washings. I would add that there is about a 5% shrinkage rate, so don't omit this step. It seems to wear like iron, and keeps its shape on the furniture forever. Love it....I would also add that I made a sleeveless sundress with leftovers and it's too heavy for that....it's now a winter jumper!
I washed this linen in warm water, and put it in the dryer until damp. Hung it on my drying rack and it turned out beautiful. Very little ironing needed, soft hand - can't wait to sew it up!!
This fabric is lovely, a soft hand. I used it as a neutral fabric in a quilt and I love it. The price is excellent for the beautiful quality. You won't be disappointed!
This is gorgeous heavier weight linen that I will be using for a duvet cover for my daughter. It is exactly what we were looking for and the value is exceptional. We will definitely be purchasing through fabrics-store.com again.
I chose to use FS MIX NATURAL Heavyweight Softened Linen–I love the breathability and texture that the linen has and is structured enough to emphasize the details of the pants while soft/opaque enough to wear without any lining. As soon as I finish a project, my immediate reaction is to style it and I like that I can dress these up or down depending on my mood for the day, whether it's a graphic tee and vans or with a blazer.

4C22 Mix Natural: Apron using full width if the fabric. No pattern. Just pleated the top. 1"-1 1/2" width pleats. Top stitched over all folds to flatten. Added ties. Neck band and buttonhole/button. Ruffle on bottom with scraps. Looks so cute on! And has great coverage for cooking Thank! Comfortable too! Thank you F-S.com!
French styled waiter's apron. Washed fabric in hot water and dried in dryer before cutting out pattern. Very little shrinkage, if any. Made this apron from just one yard and used an old April Cornell apron as my template. Photo is a bit distorted, but the apron comes down over my knees and wraps around in the back. There is a pocket (which you can't see) in the top of the apron. If you wanted a shorter apron, it would be easy to use the extra fabric for pockets in the body of the apron.
Made a harvest gathering apron for a niece... found the garlic embroidery design on annthegran.com. LOVE the texture of this heavy linen. It will accommodate a lot of use and washings. I will make one for me! Note: Upon receipt the linen is stiff/course, but with only one washing and high heat dryer, it is fabulous.
I chose to make a hand-painted jumpsuit out of the 7.1 oz natural linen using my own pattern. I love the drape of linen and feel of linen and wanted to make a jumpsuit for myself for the fall and winter. Since I live in California, it doesn't get too cold, so I thought heavier weight linen would do the job. To add some color and pattern to the natural linen, I hand-painted it after cutting out the pattern pieces and before sewing.
I love this rustic heavy linen fabric. I purchased it for bathtub curtains after we removed the glass door! The inside plastic was meant for tablecloths but works perfectly to keep the water in. The curtains are for show and the imported German braid, which I found at a garage sale, makes a nice addition. I bought 10 yards of linen on sale and will use the rest for bread bags. I had never heard of bread bags until seeing them in posts like this on The Fabrics-Store. I've also used the heavy rustic type on place mats. I never knew I could like linen so much!
Hello, this is not my work, but I love the look, which I like to replicate. I'd like to ask Annette(who posted this picture), some details, like what linen she have used as lining, or is it necessary to do lining, the source of the lettering and finally...... is the bison's head drawing, print or embroidery? You have done a great job. I'd appreciate your response or anybody, who will be reading this. you can do it the same way I'm doing it..... copy the picture and write the text starting as "Reply to Lubica's question". Thank you very much, Lubica
It's Homecoming weekend. I made this jacket from heavy weight natural linen and ultramarine heavy linen. It is lined with natural linen and oooooooo so comfortable. Try washing heavy linen several times and make a comfy oversized tee sweatshirt......you'll never wear just cotton again! ( hope my photo goes right side up.... Mine always posts sideways from my iPad..... sorry)
