Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Is this or the Luxury linen better for a bath towel? Thanks!

Heidi • July 16, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Although this weight is not widely used for bath towels you can use either or for this purpose, but most of our customers prefer our heavier linens or waffle weave for their bath towels.

I need to order three bolts of 1lO19 bleached softened linen fabric to make drapes. Do you have a drapery liner that comes in the 59" width to match this drapery width?

Brenda • February 6, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Most of our customers that use another linen for the lining will use the IL020 at 58 inches in width or the use a lighter weight cotton lawn or voile which unfortunately we do not carry.

Hello! Where is this linen made? And are all linens in your store made in the same place? I'd love to know the origin of the fabric :)

I have an antique lamp with a damaged shade that a custom upholsterer is refurbishing for me- is this an appropriate fabric for interior lining and exterior?

Jen • August 5, 2023

We would recommend getting a sample so you can see and feel the fabric in person, this way you can assess if it has the right light filtering properties you need.

What's the difference between the bleached and bleached softened linen?

Araceli • April 14, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

The only difference is the way the linen is finished. Softened linen has a softener applied to the linen to give it a smooth, silky hand, it has not been laundered so you will need to consider shrinkage (7-10%). Non-softened (no finish) linen will have a stiffer hand, but will eventually soften to that nice supple hand that all linens eventually come to with wash and use. You will need to consider shrinkage here as well (7-10%).

Would this linen be suited to furniture slipcovers ?

Delaina • November 20, 2022
Maureen profile image F|S Team

It can and has been used for slipcovers for items that are not considered "High Use" if it is then you may want to consider a heavier linen. Ordering a swatch to see the linen will also help in making your choice.

Not what I expected from description

The linen came with a very heavy sizing on it, once I washed and dried it, and the sizing washed out, the fabric surface became bubbly/wavy and slubby. Also, it is much coarser than what the description states it should be. I was going to use it for a dress but it is not suitable for that purpose. I will use it as a bathrobe most likely, or towels.

Wonderful Hand, Exceptionally Comfortable

I have now bought this linen twice - once for Christmas gifts and again for myself!! The fabric washes and handles beautifully (I washed/dryed it hot, since you never know how the end user will wash it). If you like to use the "pull a thread" method of cutting, this linen works perfectly, but it is also easy to cut flat on my table. I haven't finished my gifts yet (since, well, covid) but so far it sews up like a dream! 100% recommend for anyone looking for apparel fabric!!

Hand dyed paper bag pants

I love this fabric for hand dying projects. This pair of pants I made for my daughter. I dyed the fabric with a "triple berry mix" (blueberries, raspberries and blackberries) which makes a very nice soft rose color. I particularly like the extra soft feel of this fabric especially for clothing.

I paint the design of an alphabet I found in a magazine years ago. I had a vision of people talking in the distance on the beach and the alphabet rising and falling above them as they spoke. I use Jacquards Textile paint and Airfix for setting the paint. I am totally addicted to IL019, bleached and softened linen. I sell Falling Alphabet as yardage and also in completed garments.

Here I have painted two thistles pairing them with shorthand using black Jacquard textile paint and fixer. What you see here is 9 feet of painted IL019 bleached FS Signature Linen. When you cut 2 1/2 yards for a dress you are working with only a part of the whole design. Your garment then has interesting A symmetrical features that reflect the whole design but no longer reveal it. Paired with F/S your wearing a knock out! I am hand painting organic seeds, shorthand writing, equations and automatic writings to Fabric-Store.com linen. I use Jaquard textile paint and fixer. My inspiration comes from bird murmurations. I see murmuration as our abundant creativity, our abundant world. The dress pattern is Wiksten and is made from IL019 bleached linen. Its a beauty. IL019 is a perfect choice for this dress. Wash and wear. I wore it to Italy to test on a holiday with my hubby. It was perfect. I live in Beaverton, Oregon and yes I do sell what you see. Not the dress but the painted yardage. The photo shows the back of the dress size medium.

As an SCA participant, I chose to have a Kievan-Rus persona. I purchased the white linen to make a basic rubahka (chemise) and veil. This linen was lovely to work with, despite my inability to lay out my pieces properly without supervision. :P I have more linen to make other pieces, as well, and will be looking into purchasing some actual striped linen for the apron piece (which, honestly, is just a cotton dish towel).

The MYKONOS shirt FS BLEACHED Midweight Linen. The silhouette and practicality of the shirt can be easily dressed up or down. I would say it falls firmly in the part shirt, part jacket "shacket" category of clothing. I could easily see a lighter or heavier fabric looking fantastic. You can read more about this project here: blog.fabrics-store.com/2021/09/14/pattern-review-mykonos-shirt-in-midweight-linen/
