Luana — Apron Dress Pattern

Luana is a vintage-inspired apron dress that screams summer! Reminiscent of country living, picnics and sea outings. With its bare back, soft pleats and gathers, it is both relaxed and feminine, showing just the right amount of skin. For this project, we chose our bestselling medium weight linen in this gorgeous clay color. Named after the red rocks of Sedona, it is true to its name!

Luana features adjustable straps that cross at the back, lined bib bodice, two large inseam pockets and softly gathered midi skirt. This pattern falls into the intermediate level category due to its complicated pocket construction. But this should not scare beginner sewists as we really go through every step with detailed explanations and lots of pictures.

In order to offer these patterns and tutorials free of charge, we kept the styles and presentation pretty simple. Determining your yardage is pretty easy. After you print and assemble your desired size of the pattern, you can do a mock layout based on the width of the fabric you are purchasing. You can make your mock layout half the width of the fabric since you will likely be cutting the pieces with your fabric folded. If you will be using one of our basic linen fabrics, be sure and add about 10% extra for shrinkage if you plan on pre-washing in hot water. Happy Sewing!

Amanda profile image skip the pockets!
Reviewer: Amanda

This dress is very cute, the instructions are very detailed! However I don't think the complicated construction of the pockets is worth it. Instead of just having a pocket that sits on the front skirt, or the back skirt, the pocket is split at the top half of the pocket to allow the front and back pieces to overlap each other when you button them. However, the pockets sitting weirdly in the middle of the dress make it scary to put on for me, I can only slip the dress over my head otherwise I'd rip the stitching on the pockets somehow. Do yourself a favor and just skip the pockets (they are small anyways) and save yourself the frustration, you will have a much more fun time making this dress than I did!

Happy to receive this pattern for free. Thank You!!! The pocket construction was tricky, and the back skirt panel too short in the width for fuller gathers. But this is a gem, and I can't wait to hack it in different ways. Thanks again

Hi! I am sorry to hear you are having a hard time accessing the pattern pieces. They are included as an Attached file to the main PDF you are opening. To show the attached file - in the Adobe menu click View - Show/Hide - Navigation Panes - Attachments. Adobe pops open a side panel with the attached file which is the pattern pieces in A4 paper format. I am going to send you an email now with the pattern pieces as a separate file. Thank you!

Hi. Love the dress and I'm really excited to make it. I'm new at sewing I'm having trouble assembling the pattern. Is there something I can use as reference and how do I know where everything goes. Where do I cut and piece.

Hi! I just sent you an email as well. The first page of the pattern pieces file has a "map" for the pages in which order you would assemble the pattern in. Are you able to get to the attached pattern pieces file? It is included as an attachment to the main PDF you download.

Hi. I must say that I love the pattern, however, I am having a bit of a problem printing out the pattern itself. I am able to print the first initial 5 pages but not the attachment from adobe acrobat. Is there anything I can do?

Hi! I am sending you an email now to see where the printing problem is. Usually, once you open the attached pattern pieces file ( it is an attached file to the main PDF you are opening) - you just stay on that tab in Adobe and hit print and it will print the pattern pieces. I'm emailing you now so we can figure it out :)

I made this out of plaid wool and lined the bib, waistbands and straps with satin, to wear as a pinafore dress. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I only made one adjustment: I turned the pleats into darts. It turned out amazing!

I was able to make this in a day and it came out stunning! I'm so grateful for these patterns, I'm able to recreate my wardrobe slowly but surely. The only adjustment I made was making the skirt A-line but otherwise the fit is perfect. I also gave the bib a sating lining for comfort.
