why is there such a big jump in the waist: size 16 33-1/2" to size 18 39-1/2" ? The other sizes only increase by 1'1/2" .... I was planning to purchase this pattern, but am not a fan of making such important adjustments to a pant pattern; because i am not good at it. especially if making such an investment on a pattern any chance for resizing?

Rebecca • September 12, 2024
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello, The reason for the jump in sizing here is because the size 2-16 are drafted for a misses shape, and the sizes above are drafted for a curvy plus shape. You may like to use that information to help you select which size to start with before making adjustments.

The size and yardage chart is on this page - you can find the link by looking at the information below the product name. it will say "size and yardage chart"

I bought this pattern for my size at the time of purchase -- a size 8 -- but have since gained weight. according to the size chart, a size 12 would work best for me. do you have any suggestions for sizing up the pattern? I really don't want to have to spend another 45 dollars.

Hello, Great question! If you haven't used one of our premium pattern before, then you might not realise that our instructions are more thorough and detailed than other pattern companies, making our advanced patterns achievable for those with the willingness to learn new skills. Along with this, our premium patterns come with 1:1 sewing support via email or Zoom, so you can always get help if you need it. I would say the trickiest techniques in this pattern would be the long sleeve cuff and placket, as well as the fly zipper on the pants. Luckily, we already have supplemental photographed tutorials available on our Blog and Help center if you need them.

I love this pattern and all the options- amazing details and styling - and have made at least one of each version. For fitting the trousers, do you have a recommendation for a 'flat seat adjustment' on the tutorials? Having that available would make my tailoring and wardrobe even more wonderful.

Jessica • September 19, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello and thank you! We're glad you love our patterns. We don't have a particular flat seat adjustment we recommend as all bodies are different and all adjustments will require individual tweaking. A quick google will turn up a few flat seat adjustment tutorials, we recommend you find one that seems to work for you and give it a try!

I want to purchase this pattern but don't know if I should because I am generally a smaller size in every measurment except the waist and I often grade up. this means I would need size 2-8 in the hips and bust but a 10 or over in the waist. Honestly I can't see spending double but the waistband is not a simple shape and I would be worried to try to grade it without a guide line. Is it possible to have a 6-12 size range printed? Or am I out of luck?

Hello, We recommend sending your measurements to our In-house seamstress who can review them and make size recommendations for you. We do this with the goal to have you only purchase one size range, and provide any instructions for small alterations for fitting. Please use the contact us form or email askfabrics-store.com

I am working on my mock-up of the Riva shirt. For this fitting garment I am making the short sleeve shirt from some ages old very lightweight fabric. I think it is rayon. Anyway, I am to the collar. So when I pin the right side of the under collar to the right side of the shirt, I am confused. When I stitch this step, will I be stitching only through the under collar and the shirt? (Leaving the interfaced upper collar free for now)? When and how do I attach the upper collar? Maybe I'm having a senior moment here because I don't see any of the comments indicating any difficulty. Thank you.

Deanna • August 8, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

When you sew the collar to the shirt you will sew both layers of the collar. They raw edges will then be enclosed in the bias strip which is applied later in the instructions. For further help please email us directly, and our in-house seamstress can help 1:1.

I am a shape that the measurements are from three different sizes. I used to really like the multi-size patterns so that I could 'blend' them painlessly for adjustments. Would you consider printing multi-size patterns?

Why is there such a huge jump in size between the 16 and 18? I was very interested in buying this pattern, but going by your measurements, the 16 would be a smidge too tight. However, the 18 would be much too large. Why is the sizing so odd?

Elizabeth • November 17, 2022
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello, The size guide on this pattern has a large jump from the 2-16 from the 18-24 as they are drafted for two different size groups, traditionally know as 'misses' and 'plus'. If you would like some assistance finding the best size for you, please feel free to contact us directly with your body measurements and our in-house patterns consultant can help out. Please note our newly released patterns in 2023 won't have as much of a gap between sizes.

The pleats form the waist shaping for this design, if you'd like to remove them, you may like to consider replacing them with darts if you are familiar with pattern alterations.

What weight linen do you suggest for a wide leg pant with a drawstring waist. Would I use light weight for a shirt ?

We love our medium weight and heavyweight linens for pants. If you are new to working with our linen we recommend our IL019 Medium weight. You can use the very same medium weight fabrics for shirts too, or our IL020 lightweight linen is a great alternative!

Thrilled with the Riva pants and shorts.

I had never made a tailored pant before (nor had I installed a zipper in a pant), but I knew that I was in good hands with the Fabri-Store patterns based on previous pattern purchases. The instructions and online tutorials are fabulous. The high quality of the paper pattern makes it simple to trace the pieces to adjust and blend sizes when needed. I am absolutely thrilled with the style, fit and comfort; classic Katharine Hepburn style. I recommend using the size guide based on body measurements, not the finished garment for best fit. Lastly, I recommend the heavy weight linen for the shorts and pants.

Matching button-down shirt and shorts sets have been dominating my inspo files since early spring, but I had yet to make one because I just couldn't pin down the perfect patterns to create the *exact* look I was dreaming of. Cue the Riva Pattern Collection. It's comprised of a button-down shirt with either long sleeve or short sleeve options, and trousers with a shorts option. Classic tailored elements such as pleating, sleeve plackets, and double welt pockets really elevate these classic wardrobe staples, so I was excited to dive right into the process of sewing these up.

Love my Riva linen shirts!

Riva shirt was my first FS pattern purchase as I was drawn to the style of the back pleat. I have made 3 shirts from this pattern out of FS linen so far. The royal purple signature finish is my favorite. I love some things about this pattern and some things not so crazy about. First off, I love the paper weight of the pattern! So much better than tissue. I wish the ink was colorfast as I pressed some of the pieces with my iron and smeared the print. I know the tube was included but I fold my patterns flat for storage and put the smaller pieces in a plastic sheet protector. It sewed up fairly easy. I found that even with the instruction booklet, the sleeve placket instructions were not real clear. I emailed FS customer support and they told me about the help on line for the placket— it helped— and looks very professional. I was pleasantly surprised that the back pattern piece was full size. After my first shirt, I cut the back pattern piece on the fold-line and made one half a regular (pleat-less) back pattern (which I also made shorter), and now I have two versions for versatility! One with pleat and one without. I love how the collar attaches with a bias strip. That was new to me and I love it! So easy —and no neck facing in the way. What I have found out though, as I wear these shirts is that the weight of the back yoke and pleat tend to make the shirt slip to the back. The shorter pleat-less version helps, but it seems like the shoulder seam should be farther forward to the front? Not a deal breaker by any means. The sleeve is super easy to attach. By my third shirt, they were going together very quickly! I haven't made the pants yet. I will make the short sleeve version next. I miss pockets though, so I'm going to add pockets on the front or side seam next time. I wore one on the plane last week and it worked well as a jacket in the cool air. I love my linen shirts!

The most beautifully made pattern I have ever seen

The RIVA linen pants are the perfect middle-ground between suit pants and jeans, while still being perfect for getting some boba or cold brew with friends after work. RIVA pants have all the delicate features of suit pants — double welts back pockets, side pockets, covered zipper, waist band. But the double pleats alongside the pockets release all the tension from a pair of formal suit pants into a generously flowing garment. I love the feeling of freedom and relaxation being in wide leg pants. The waistband is definitely the highlight of RIVA pants, the curve and small geometric shapes at the center back give a feel of focus and independence.

A style for the ages

I see the Riva as a sophisticated (if done in the right size) trouser that can be worn in a casual, professional, or glamorous fabric for the occasion. I have not as yet gotten to the stage of cutting and sewing a trouser but I saw the value of having a pattern that would serve me well. I thank your pattern creating team and of course the first trouser would be in linen when I get to it. I do have the 4C22 from a previous order

I made the Riva Shorts and I was so pleased with the instructions! There are many tailoring details that really elevate this pattern. If you've been sewing indie patterns for a while, this will be a treat! I finished this project with higher confidence than when I started and the results were great. Problem? I made the wrong size. I really don't know what I was thinking when I chose the size. I have reordered this pattern set in the next size up because I love it so much.

Cherie • November 23, 2023

I think most of have been on the hunt for the perfect pleated trousers...or at least it seems that way when scrolling my Instagram feed. There is an abundance of patterns out there right now and the fact is, pants are just hard. I am not going to lie, I've bought 3-4 (maybe more!) high waisted, pleated pants patterns, a couple of wide, a couple straight leg but I haven't felt inspired to actually make them, ya know? There was always something I wasn't sure about – how wide the legs were, the direction of the pleats, the overall fit ratio, etc. Then enters the Riva Trouser.

Christina • September 14, 2023

The Riva Collection is worth the price- and that is not just me saying that because I am writing this. Not only is the quality of the instructions and pattern drafting top notch, but you also get more than your average indie pattern- from colored instruction booklets, to colored A0 pattern, AND the licence to use the pattern for profit if you so choose. The Shorts view, however, is chef's kiss. I cut out my preferred size based on the finished garment measurements (I always prefer less ease), and the entire process from cutting to sewing was seamless. (Like my bad pun?) The precision and thought behind each step, construction process, and finishes of the Riva really show the years of garment drafting and experience behind the pattern.

Caitlin • August 10, 2023

I'm a big fan of a pattern with multiple garment options included. I have made the Riva Top multiple times and with different length variations even a dress but today I pulled out the Riva Pattern yet again to make a second pant variation, the shorts! Just as I enjoyed the process of the pants when I made them in heavier 7.1oz Bleached Softened, I have enjoyed the shorts made in this beautiful 7.1 oz Juniper Softened! These feel like the perfect summer resort wear shorts to dress up or dress down your outfit and I'm not even going to a resort.

Alisha • June 28, 2023

Adding a classic fitted trouser to your wardrobe is always a good decision. These pants definitely have all the details of a classic garment worth adding to your collection. I did not have any white pants and I'm so pleased to have added the Riva Pants to my fashion options. I hope you enjoy the finished product as much as I do.
