Customer Questions and Answers
I just ordered some of your narrow linens to make some kitchen towels for a Christmas gift and, at the last minute, decided to add a package of your softener, too. Last night I got to wondering, though: Do you have any idea, if I soften the linen for the towels, if that will affect how well they absorb water? Thanks very much, Annette
Hello Annette, We have developed our softener especially for our fabrics and have tested it to make sure it does not impede on the fabrics absorption ability.
Once a fabric is softened, is that permanent or is it necessary to soften each wash?
The fabric is permanently softened :)
I dye fabrics using natural plant dyes that I make myself . I use cotton and linen. I'm concerned this would inhibit the dying process. how would it effect the dyes once the dying process is completed?
We haven't tested this fabric on naturally dyed fabrics, but if your dyes are wash fast when dyed, then the softener will penetrate the fibers and soften the fabric. This has not effected any of our colors which have been dyed by us, but you may like to do a test just in case to be sure.
I'm concerned about allergies to ingredients. I have sensitive skin. I'd really like to try it, but hesitant. Anyone write about problems? Cindy
No, we've never has anyone complain about our fabrics, in fact people with sensitive skin prefer it because it is OkeoTex certified to be free from over 100 harmful chemicals.
Hi I purchased the linen potion and I loved it, I'm looking to buy more quantity than the packets shown on the website, do you have like a regular laundry bottle-type? or do you only sell individual packets? I'm washing 50 garments of 3 yrds each. Thank you!
Hello, We're so glad you love our softening potion. At this time we only have the sachets I'm sorry!
Are you supposed to add the softener every time you wash the linen? I was hoping for a one and done solution.
The softener will last for many washed, and if used on linen will usually not need another treatment as the linen will soften up itself with repeated washing and wear.
What are the ingredients in this potoon?
They are listed above as: Ingredients: Water and Dialkylester Ammonium Methosulfate Naturally Derived and Plant Derived. Readily biodegradable, Bio-Based Kosher (Certified). We manufacture to the highest standards in a cosmetic-grade facility.
How should I Use Linen Softening Potion in an He front load washing machine?
You will add the softener to your machines softener drawer.
Would this work with hemp fabric as well?
Yes, this will work with hemp.
Does this need to be used just once or every time you wash the fabric in order to keep it soft?
No this softener works well for multiple washes after the initial treatment.
Is this softener recommended for quilts?
Yes, you can use this softener on quilts. It was designed for our linen fabric, but works wonderfully on other natural fibers, garments, and similar items.
Is it best to use the softener before cutting and sewing, or does it matter? Thanks!
it really comes down to personal preference! Some people prefer to cut and sew on a stiffer fabric, whereas others like it soft and drapey.
i've got linen shirts, pants, etc. that were purchased and not made with you linen. i would like those pieces to be softer. does this product soften any linen or is it just for your linen?
Yes, our softener will soften any linen and cotton fabrics as well.
Does this softener need to be used every time the garment is washed to maintain the softness
You can if you'd like but no it does not need to be added every time you wash the garment as linen with wash and use will get softer.
In your experience, when this softener is used on linen, will it make the resulting garments less wrinkled when they are worn?
Yes, in our experience this makes linen less prone to crisp creases.
This might be a stupid question, but I'm new to linen. Just received my first order. Is regular fabric softener bad for linen?
Some softeners can reduce the absorbency of fabrics with repeated use as they can leave a film on the fibers.
Does the softener affect the longevity of linen?
No, the softener does not effect the longevity of the linen.
Does the softener need to be used for every wash to maintain the softness or is it a one -time use?
The softener lasts for many washes, you can reapply the softener as needed.
I'm going to be ordering some fabric softener packets along with an order for linen fabric. When I wash the linen for the first time (whether before or after construction of the garment) is it a good idea to add a Color Catcher if washing a few pieces of different colored linens at the same time?
Hello, We recommend washing like colors together only first the first wash to prevent any color transfer. You would want to put a color catcher in with these loads and not wash different colors together until they have been thoroughly prewashed.
Hi. I just bought some of the softener. Would you recommend using it before or after making the garment. Also, not related to the softener, do you have articles on how to dye linen?
Hello, when you use the softener is up to you, some people find it easier to sew with a more crisp fabric, for others it is no difference. We have an article series on our blog on natural dyeing, for dyeing with readymade dyes, please see tutorials made by the dye manufacturer as techniques and directions may vary.
how many washes will this give?
The softener will provide one wash for 3-8 yards of fabric.
Is this product recommended for waffle cloth towels or will it effect the absorbency of the towels?
Yes, you can use this on the waffle weave fabric and it will not affect the absorbency.
Is this intended to be used once for a piece of fabric, or for regular maintenance of softness?
This works brilliantly in one wash!
I've read the instructions but I still got it wrong. I added it to the wash cycle. Is it just supposed to be in the rinse cycle?
We use it in the wash cycle :)
Is the softener safe for septic tanks?
Our softener is biodegradable so it should be okay,as long as, the septic tank is in good working order. I would recommend reviewing the ingredients of our softener, listed on the site, and cross check them against any list you may have on hand of what not to use in your septic tank to make sure none of our ingredients are on that list.
Is this softener scented?
This is not scented.
Will your softener also work on denim jeans?
Yes very much so with several customers letting me know that it does an amazing job softening their denim items.
Dumb question: The softening is permanent, correct?
Yes, the softener is permanent as long as you continue to care for your linen using our recommended washing and care instructions.
I purchased the linen softening lotion but now I'm confused, does this go where the fabric softener goes in the machine or the detergent side? Sorry question sounds dumb now that I actually typed it lol!
Hello, it can go in either compartment, one of my colleagues uses it in the wash cycle and I use it in my softener dispenser, both with fabulous results.
Is this the same softener you used in all of your softened linen?
This softener is designed to be used in home washing machines and is very similar to what we use on a large scale when making our softened and signature finish fabrics.
I bought some 100% cotton batik, which is quite stiff. It always is. I'd like to make a garment from it but would like a really soft drape. How well will your softening product work on my cotton batik?
This softener works well on cotton fabrics as well :)
Do I have to use the softener every time I wash my linen throws or is it a 1 time thing and then they stay soft forever?
No, you don't have to use the softener each time you wash your linen. The softener is simply a kick start to your linen's natural softening process which occurs with each washing and use. People often use the softener when their fabric is new, before it has had a chance to begin this process.
Does adding white vinegar to the wash stop the bleeding? And, is adding vinegar done for every wash or just the initial one?
Hello, Adding vinegar to the wash to stop bleeding is actually no longer a viable solution for todays formulation of dyes. We recommend using color catchers in the wash. Our fabrics usually don't leach any dye past one or two pre-washes where the fabric is able to completely submerge in cool/warm water on a gentle cycle.
Hi, I'm making a sheath shift dress from 019 linen and the pattern calls for interfacing. What weight (featherweight, light or medium) would be best? Thanks!
Hello, We recommend woven fusible interfacing in the same weight or one weight lighter than your fabric depending on your desired stiffness.
Can I soften a garment after it's constructed?
Yes absolutely :)
We have allergies here. what is in the unscented
Please refer to the description above where you will see the ingredient content of our fabric softener.
Hi F-S Team, Is this meant to be used in the wash cycle or in the rinse cycle? Thank you!
Revised Based on our in-house testing, it is best to use in the wash cycle.
How many washes will the 3.5 oz package do?
It would depend on the amount of linen you are washing. One packet is for 3-8 yards so if you have 3 yards you can get almost 3 washes if you have the 8 yards it will only cover the one wash.
Hi Can I used this on cotton fabric? I have some cotton fabric that is stiff....I was wondering if this softener would work. Pat
This softener can be used on other fabrics. We have Designed and tested this product to work best on our Linen fabrics.
Does Eco-Friendly Fabric Softener permanently make the linen much softer?
The softener aids in softening the linen from the start. With every wash and use the linen will continue to get softer, the softener does not wash it becomes part of the linen.
I stpurchased 4C22 which I have purchased before and enjoyed. This time however it is so rough and stiff. I just washed it but it hasn't helped. If I were to get this softener will it make it like the 4C22, softened like I purchased before from Fabric-store?
With wash and use our linen will soften up. Using this softener will help you achieve the desired softness you are wanting. Please also try a warmer water when washing and dryer balls which will also aid in softening the linen.
This item contains an ammonium methylsulfate. I am very allergic to sulfur and it's derivatives. Therefore I'm allergic to the sulfur in my own tap water resulting in severe rash - possible hospitalization for IV drip if severe enough. So please advise: is this product used in a wash cycle at the beginning ? If so, the rinse cycle should reduce the residual amount of sulfur left on the dried fabric, I hope. But if it's added with the rinse cycle, then it's unlikely I can risk the sulfur exposure. Please advise. Regards, Clem
As with most softeners this one would be used in the rinse cycle. Since there is an ingredient in our product that you have a known allergy we would not want you to use any product that could cause an issue.
Does this softener act the same as With regular fabric softeners causing fabrics to be unable to absorb moisture when trying to dry dishes or after a shower.
W have not heard of any issues with absorbancy when using our softener. In house testing did not show this to be an issue either.
How many packets are contained ?
These are sold as individual 3.5 ounce packets.
Should this be used for every washing (after completed sewing project) or only the initial washing.
It is used primarily for the initial washing, but if you have some left over you can use it after as well.
Do I need to use this on your linen that is advertised as "softened"?
You do need to wash the softened linen in order to remove shrinkage and yes you can use a softener to enhance and expedite the softening process. In our recommended instructions we advise that yes you can use a softener that is free and clear, which ours is.
How many loads can I wash with one softening packet - how much do I use for 5 yards of unwashed linen? I am interested in this product but do need to order several packets? what is a typical washing machine load of the number of yards of linen? Thank you, Lelia Kentmeister
One 100 ml packet for 3-8 yards of fabric.. The amount of linen you are able to add to your machine depends on the size of your machine and the weight of the linen you are washing. As with regualr washings, you would not want to overload the machine .
can this product be used on ramie? Nice light weight ramie coming via Australia.
Ramie is also a natural fiber and I cannot see why you would not be able to use our softener for this as fabric as well. Since we have not tested this product on Ramie, you should test a small piece to make sure there are no issues.
Is this a one time fabric treatment and not something you would use regularly in the landry?
It is meant to be used to soften the linen before you construct your project, but if you have some left over and you make sure to spot test for color fastness, there is no reason why you could not add it to your other linen items when laundering.
I have been making kitchen towels from your 19" wide linen for several years and everyone that i give them to loves them. I recently tried using this softener before using them and it makes a real difference in the feel and appearance of the towels.
I put a package of this with warm water in my front loader washing machine. Then I added new fatigue canvas utility pants that I soaked in warm water in a bucket first. The pants were stiff and I knew it would take years to soften them up by regular wash and wear. They came out great! No color fading and soft like enzyme washed jeans.
I was disappointed that the linen dress that I made wasn't smooth looking. On your advice, I washed it in the Softener which worked perfectly. It is softer and irons smooth. I did the same with the next piece of linen before I cut and sewed it - looks good
I doubted the need for softener or that the product would not interfere with my dye process. I used it on 4C22 bleached rustic linen and on two linen tops I had made with other weights. They all came out significantly softer. One of the tops was scratchy and was not likely to sell. It softened wonderfully. The rustic bleached, however, was splotchy when it came out of the indigo bath. It is actually pretty great looking, but I would like more control over the outcome. I will scour more carefully next time. And I will definitely purchase more softener.
I ordered 3 packages, and used part of the first on not only your linen, but linen I have purchased elsewhere. It left the linens amazingly soft. My only drawback was that the shipping charges to Canada were well beyond the cost of the product. Soooo I will ration the remainder, as I purchase linen often.
