IL085 Navel Orange is a Jacquard cloth created by weaving different color threads to create intricate patterns - or paintings woven with thread. This particular design carries a pattern of oranges, leaves, and blossoms surrounded by symmetrical borders.

The engineering of this cloth allows the Jacquard to be read equally well from either side - you have a reversible fabric that changes its dominant color scheme depending on what side you pick.

The bright colors add a modern aesthetic to this classical pattern allowing items made from this cloth to be right at home in traditional as well as modern interiors. Design created exclusively for F|S

IL085 is woven out of the same long-staple wet-combed 100% linen thread we use to weave everyone's favorite All-Purpose medium weight IL019. However, because it needed to be thicker for towels, it has a 16% higher thread count and therefore a heavier weight of 6.8 ounces a square yard.

This fabric is narrow at 20" wide with a finished selvage - this allows you to spend less time cutting and sewing and get to the fun part of using your items sooner. Because this cloth is woven using the same size thread with nearly an identical thread count for warp and weft - the fabric will have even shrinkage of 8% both for length and width. Shrinkage is based on a warm wash and low-heat dry.

This fabric is 100% linen ( flax) and has received rigorous Oeko-Tex certification ensuring that the items are biodegradable, recyclable, and free of harmful toxins or irritants.

Narrow width does take some creative adjusting.

Narrow cloth is perfect for:

  • Bags
  • Placemats and napkins
  • Runners
  • Decorative Pillows
  • Appliance Covers
  • Potholders
  • Aprons
  • and, of course, Kitchen Towels ( these will leave no lint on glass and are great for fine china and crystal)

How many yards should I order if I want to make 4 tea towels? Beginner sewer here :)

This depends on the finished length of your towels. You can get 4 towels from 3 yards as a good guide for a generous towel size.

I'm not asking a question, just making a statement after reading some of the comments. I've always, always worn Linen, I've never washed my Linen in hot water always cold and very rarely dry in dryer usually hang dry. If I put them in the dryer it's for five minutes.

Thank you for your comment. We also recommend that our linen is washed on a gentle warm/cool cycle and either line dries or machine dried on a low heat setting. We do not recommend hot washing the linen fabric.

Is it silly I want to make a jacket out of this fun print Or a belt?

Not at all! More than a few of our customers have made clothing from our narrow width linens, mostly from the IL084 range. But I think clothing from this fabric would be amazing! Remember this fabric is narrow, so you will need to piece it together to get the width you need. Happy sewing!

I am making placemats and napkins with this. Is it best to cut the fabric, (allowing 8% for shrinkage) before or after washing? I've also decided to make a lining, on reverse side using your standard heavy weight linen. How much shrinkage should I expect?

Susan • November 12, 2022

Hello, We highly recommend pre-washing your fabrics prior to sewing. The 4C22 can shrink approximately 7% on the length. pre-washing will ensure that your fabrics won't shrink after you've sewn them up.

Beautiful but...

I made dish towels from the orange lemons. The linen color and design is exquisite but the towels are a hot wrinkled mess after washing and look it. (I tried both drying in a machine and hanging to dry) The linen feels like very thin dust cloth. However, they still are my first go-to choice as they are super absorbent. I just wish the fiber structure was better as they are not pretty.

Jeannette profile image I think this fabric is great!

I do not think this fabric looks or feels cheap--in fact, a lot of lint means good linen in my opinion. It is a beautiful color of orange and really brightens up the kitchen on a dim winter day.

poor quality

This is the first time I have been disappointed with the linen I have purchased from F/S. The general quality is poor. I had to pull threads to true the fabric. (One pull I lost 2 inches!) The amount of lint!!! (7 washings!) (The heavy weight jacquard I have purchased only needed five...) The completed towels look like they are made of cheap fabric.

jacquard linen

I too, was amazed at the amt of lint generated by this linen. I bought enough to make 6 towels and was disappointed in the flimsy quality of the fabric. The colors are beautiful, but , when compared with the linen I had purchased previously, the fabric is thin and not nearly as nice.

Too much lint!

I can't believe no one else has mentioned the amount of lint that is generated by this fabric when washed. Far worse than any other fabric I've purchased here. Clumps of lint remain in the washing machine, and big clumps of lint attach to the fabric as well. I washed and machine dried the fabric three times, and it was still covered with lint.

One yard of this lovely runner came up at 30% off and for some reason I had to buy it...after it arrived I realized why! LOL! It was a beautiful compliment to the potted oranges and lemons my husband painted years ago. I did need to apply iron on interfacing to the back before stitching it to a lining as the linen kept shifting. All worth the effort!

Shauna • July 13, 2023

This is the amount of lint out of the lint trap from 8 yards of fabric (hand used for scale of lint ball :) The washing machine used is a front loading washer, with regular wash cycle on warm water; followed with regular dry cycle on low heat. No lint was left over in the drum of the washing machine and that was the only lint from the drier. Linen is a natural fiber that does lint and the more agitation the cloth undergoes in the wash/dry - the more lint it will produce. Top loading washing machines tend to be more aggressive as are certain wash settings ( like for bedding or towels). Rougher washes/dries cause more fiber agitation and damage the linen thread which shows up as extra lint that was basically beaten out of the fabric. Using a gentle cycle like Delicates or low tumble will prevent the cloth from excessive agitation and reduce linting.

Happy Thanksgiving. I love this fabric. It makes a cheerful runner. I also made a tea towel. After hemming, I washed it warm and found no shrinkage in the width of the fabric.

The navel orange Jacquard dish towel just lights up the kitchen!

Jeannette • October 15, 2022

I made these napkins out of your navel orange Jacquard linen for my son's birthday. He and his wife are excellent cooks and love to entertain. They love them! The hardest thing about this fabric was cutting it, it's so lovely.
