fantastic fabric, but not for beginners

I've always wanted floaty, gauzy curtains for my windows for the warm weather. This fabric is my dream come true! It looks exactly the way I expected to, and it gives the house a whole new feeling of relaxed summer living. However, you must use some common sewing sense while working with it! If you're a beginner, you should expect to struggle a bit. It needs extremely gentle handling. I did not wash it at all before I used it, because when you look at the weave you can see that there's very little structure. It reminds me of cheesecloth, but of course it's prettier than cheesecloth. The point is, I would recommend keeping it out of water! If you're planning to make something that you're going to want to wash over and over, use different fabric. You need to measure and cut this very carefully. Measure... mark... measure... measure again... order more than you think you're going to need, especially if you're doing a large item like a door-length curtain and you want the stripes to hang nice and straight. I used safety pins instead of straight pins for pinning purposes. If you're patient with it you'll end up with a lovely project, but you need to know what you're getting into. Order a sample first if you're not an experienced sewist.

it is falling apart

this fabric is not useful. it is scraggy and unravels too readily. it's not a pretty color and i can't find a use for it.

Beautiful scarves

I recently purchased 2 yards of this lovely striped linen for what I expected to be 2 scarves for gifts. After washing it and laying it out I decided it would probably be best if I made 3 scarves the length of the 2 yards. Do I cut 3 which turned out perfectly and also discovered that cutting just outside the stripe and leaving it without hemming gave it just the right amount of fringe . The stripe acts as a selvage so it doesn't continue to ravel. Had 3 scarves in no time with just a simple hem in both ends.

Deborah jo profile image Gauze Stripe by trial

I purchased this fabric to make an overdress to wear for a beach wedding. I know, not practical. Changed my mind. So... I decided to make an underslip for a pantsuit shown in the post your work section. I prewashed because I just didn't know how it was going to turn out and I'm glad I did. The stripes all puckered. It was beautiful!!! I know. Silly of me but it was exactly what I was wanting. I sew eclectic clothing for myself, and my motto is.. Love me, Love my clothes... I used an asymmetric slip pattern by SewTinaGivens.com and wore it under her Elope pant suit. The top is Firecracker Red softened linen and the pants grey cotton. It's extremely striking. Thank you. You did it again. Your fabric is amazing!

Beautiful fabric!

I just received this fabric last night and immediately began prepping it for sewing. I thought I would use it for a scarf and it will need a few more washings before it softens enough to use it as one. I have a comment about the reviews of this particular linen--order a swatch if you have any doubts at all about how it will perform with the sewing project you have in mind. In all cases, if you wish to wash it, it will alter the linen to a lesser to greater degree depending upon how you wash it. I used a mild detergent, washed the fabric *by itself* and set the action of my machine to "gentle" cycle. I had no thread or stripe distortion and little shrinkage. It wrinkled as I expected it would, based on the reviews. I love it!!

Disappointing

I ordered a yard for a Colonial neckerchief. It is very loosely woven and quite rough. I was offered a refund, but for one yard didn't bother. Please get a sample before ordering. I would not even use this for sheer curtains.

Horribly disappointed

I am quite saddened by this fabric. I washed it, by itself in a front-load machine, and dried it on a low setting to damp dry, and now the linen is DESTROYED. Even after ironing, sobbing the entire time, it is trashed. I have never had this happen before.

Fine and floaty

The ethereal floating quality of this fabric is exactly what I had searched for, perfect to allow light in while giving privacy. I'm a total novice and tried to read everything that sounded relevant to my project, however there was still an unexpected feature that did not come up in any reviews. The fabric is so delicate that it becomes flimsy when wet, and despite gentle handling the weave distorted alarmingly. It was a difficult sew for me, but in the end I have exactly what I wanted, beautiful fine soft linen drapes.

wow!

the photo here doesn't do justice to the gauzy semi transparency of this linen. i bought 4 yards thinking after shrinkage I could use the lines to guide machine embroidery. I'm not sure about this project now - it depends on how the fabric is after washing. It is pretty much transparent and then the stripe is semi transparent - stunning fabric

When the door is open and the breeze blows, these curtains billow in a lovely way.

I chose Gauze Stripes for my Jacqueline slip underdress by SewTinaGiven.com to go under Elope pant suit by same top is Firecracker Red softened linen and I love it. They had recommended silk organza, but truthfully... I'm just not a silk kinda girl.. I love my linen, and I LOVE your linen.

Deborah jo • September 8, 2019

I love this linen, washed once, by itself, gentle cycle, cold water, mild detergent, and five minutes on very low heat in dryer so it is still damp and ready to hang to dry completely.

Swatch compared to fabric after washing, showing a degree of distortion of the threads
