IL020 NATURAL - 100% Linen - Light (3.7 oz/yd2)
Natural is the earth made, not dyed, color of the flax plant once it is made into thread. No dyes, no bleach. The only thing that impacts the color of the cloth from one production to the next ( if it is more beige or grey) is the amount of sunshine and rain that particular flax harvest had.
At a lighter weight of 3.5 ounces this 100% linen is woven with finer threads to give it a smoother appearance. Referred to as lightweight or handkerchief linen, this fine, but surprisingly sturdy linen brings new meaning to the term "sheer elegance".

I used this cool, thin linen for workout wear: 1) Unstructured shorts with elastic waist. 2) Loose, v-neck pullover top from "medical scrubs" pattern. It is my favorite outfit for 100 degree weather workouts. Dries fast. Nice color for reflecting sun, but doesn't show dirt like white does. Very pleased.
These sound wonderful!
This linen feels great. I wore linen for my museum job doing ‘livin'g history-18th century for over 20 years. I fell in live with the way it felt. Now retired, I am making modern adaptations of some of the things that were the most comfortable. I am thrilled that a former co-worker told me about this site. The reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the fabric was cut so crocked on the grain that I lost six inches.
I've looked for linen for a while. This is exactly what I wanted. The descriptions of the products great for helping decide which one to buy. This color will be part of a baby blanket. Can't wait to finish so I can wash and see how soft it will get!
I've received my first linen yardage and will be ordering more. This linen is for a Native American Women's Southern Cloth Dance Shawl. I'll post a photo when it's finished.
Absolutely love it !
I have never been disappointed with linen from F/S and this is no exception. At first I thought this piece was not light enough to be "handkerchief" but after two washings it lightened up. I make very simple tops and pants which have become the only things I wear in the Texas heat. The color is a perfect neutral and a great background for my "interesting" jewelry.
I had to add this review to balance out the 4-star review given by another reviewer. Slubs are completely normal and a sign that the linen has not been chemically altered. This should give it five stars. It's not an imperfection!
Used this fabric to sew undergarments, it is slightly stretchy on the bias, nice feel against the skin, not heavy, easy to sew once I figured it out. But it has some thicker twiggy bits in it that can be scratchy, I try to pull these out. It would get 5 stars if was perfectly smooth.
This fabric is very beautiful in color and feel. So far I have made two nightgowns for myself, styled like simple Japanese dresses, and a nightshirt from an old Simplicity pattern for my 89-YO stepdad, who used it last night for the first time and slept better than he's slept in years. I use French seams which I then sew down in the manner of flat-felled seams, so my garments are pretty much reversible, tho' the seams do look a bit better on one side than the other. I'm so happy I've found this great source! Someday I may branch out into other colors, but I do love the new-old look of the Natural, and I like knowing that it's not been bleached or dyed.
I have purchased plenty of fabric from this site, but I do believe that I have found my ultimate go-to favourite; AGAIN! I made a duvet cover, for my full size bed, that now holds a 9 lbs hand-stuffed wool duvet (quite heavy) so I needed something light and airy. The fabric is indeed just that and so very soft. The texture is vivid. The colour is a rich flax. Wonderfully cool and cozy all at once! For me, it's the perfect complement to a great night's sleep. There really is no place like Fabric-Store.com! Your outstanding customer service, your amazing linen and prices! Yahoo AGAIN:-D
Hi! I haven't sewn for myself in years and by purchasing Linen, "Jumped in with both feet"!! While nerve wracking for sure, this fabric was so easy to sew/ work with. My V neck semi sleeveless shell turned out beautifully! I am so pleased with the ease and fit of the linen! I will be using the three other pieces of linen for additions to my growing linen wardrobe! Thank you so much for making The purchase of your linen so easy!!!
I used this material to make a turban-style medieval peasant veil. I washed it as many times as I could before wearing it, which makes a good deal of difference in how workable it is; prewashing is an absolute must. Be aware that this thing wrinkles like the devil on the weft; depending on your application, this could be a very good thing or a very annoying thing. For my application, it merely made it easier to twist the fabric for pinning. I expect anything that looks better with a regular wrinkle (Viking women's smocks and peploses being two things that come to mind immediately) would be marvelous made of this fabric.
Jedi Wrap Dress (or unisex robe) After much deliberation I finally chose the most classic color of all for my first project of Fabric-Store handkerchief linen: Natural. It was darker than expected (though I'd ordered at least 15 color swatches, Natural wasn't one of them & I didn't want to wait any longer!). But I love it; I'd actually describe it as a greyed-khaki, only better, as it has the varigated tones within that a true fully-dyed khaki wouldn't. I also believe it will turn out to be a much more "forgiving" color than the light-natural I was imagining. The garment: I have been a "Japanophile" since I can remember and started making unconventional kimonos and kimono-inspired clothing since about 1980. I wanted a breathable summer dress so it was "natural" for me to incorporate the lines of a favorite wrap skirt. When I first put on the very pale yellow cotton prototype for this dress I used a black leather belt and it made me think of Star Wars.
I used natural IL020 for this prayer shawl (I named *Ancient Ways*, IL019 blue bonnet for the stripes underside lining and IL020 bleached white for the middle stripes and corners . This is my most popular design. my customers have told me many times it captures the heart. and I know why... the natural un-dyed Linen gives an old fashioned look and is excellent for making tunics, caftans and any garment you are desiring to have the "natural" old fashioned look with a crisp clean style.
