Natural is the earth made, not dyed, color of the flax plant once it is made into thread. No dyes, no bleach. The only thing that impacts the color of the cloth from one production to the next ( if it is more beige or grey) is the amount of sunshine and rain that particular flax harvest had.

At a lighter weight of 3.5 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is woven with finer threads to give it a smoother appearance. Referred to as lightweight or handkerchief linen, this fine, but surprisingly sturdy linen brings new meaning to the term "sheer elegance".

Hi! Would this handkerchief linen be the right weight for making curtains? (They will be hung in front of a closet.)

Irina profile image F|S Team

IL020, 3.7 oz is light weight of linen. If you looking to have light weight see through fabric. We also recommend to review IL019, 5.3oz medium weight , it's also a great source for the curtains.

Hello, How does this lightweight linen IL020 compares to a 190 gram/m2 linen in terms of weight? Is it lighter or heavier, please? Thank you.

Nata • December 26, 2024
Irina profile image F|S Team

IL020 Lightweight is handkerchief linen is 130 gr/m2 , but we have in our assortment IL019 medium weigh which is 185gr/m2.

HEllo! Is there a medium weight version of this natural finish? I've made pants with the heavy rustic natural and they were great, but am looking for a slightly lighter option this time. Tahnk you.

Can I make summer mens slacks with the lighweight hankerchief fabric? Will it be too shear?

Andre • July 9, 2024
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Generally, we recommend mens slacks to be made of the IL019 or 4C22 which is mediumweight and heavyweight respectively.

I am planning some long sleeve summer dresses for my daughter out of this dress as she reacts to all forms of sunscreen and I want to protect her exceptionally fair skin. Can anyone recommend whether the 5ish oz or 3is oz is better for this? I would prefer not to have to make additional slip to wear underneath if it can be avoided so i don't know if the 3oz would be too sheer at the same time I don't want her to melt into a grease spot and I'm worried the 5oz is too heavy. Advice welcome!

The IL020 lightweight linen is sheer only in light colors. Medium and dark tones are opaque. This natural color is opaque.

You have a few options. We love our IL030 gauze for a light and airy scarf. You may also enjoy our IL020 lightweight linen as it comes in a wider range of colors and has a lovely smooth surface.

I want to make pants to bring on a trip to a tropical climate. Is this light weight 3.5-4 oz linen too sheer or light for pants?

Trudy • May 28, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

This fabric can be lovely for pants. We would usually recommend our IL019 medium weight fabric for light pants for higher durability as well.

IL020 NATURAL In this fabric what is the shrinkage in warm wash and dryer? Can I assume it is not preshrunk? I think the user is yes but want to make sure. Thank You!

Amy • November 5, 2022
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Expected shrinkage is 7-10% based on a cool to warm water wash - low heat dry. The linen is not pre-shrink.

Perfect for warm weather!

I started my linen journey with the medium weight, but was curious about something lighter. I was really worried the handkerchief weight would be too light, and see-through. Well, I can say this is just amazing, and my favorite linen weight for clothes! I bought this weight and had someone make me a pair of drawstring pants with it, as well as some light shorts. They are my absolute favorite pants to sleep in, and just wear in or out of the house when it's warm. The linen is so light and the pants hang perfectly. So, it's worth the price. You won't regret it!

Perfect for summer workout shorts and top

I used this cool, thin linen for workout wear: 1) Unstructured shorts with elastic waist. 2) Loose, v-neck pullover top from "medical scrubs" pattern. It is my favorite outfit for 100 degree weather workouts. Dries fast. Nice color for reflecting sun, but doesn't show dirt like white does. Very pleased.

Cindy profile image Wonderful light linen

This linen feels great. I wore linen for my museum job doing ‘livin'g history-18th century for over 20 years. I fell in live with the way it felt. Now retired, I am making modern adaptations of some of the things that were the most comfortable. I am thrilled that a former co-worker told me about this site. The reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the fabric was cut so crocked on the grain that I lost six inches.

Linen

I've looked for linen for a while. This is exactly what I wanted. The descriptions of the products great for helping decide which one to buy. This color will be part of a baby blanket. Can't wait to finish so I can wash and see how soft it will get!

Very Happy

I have never been disappointed with linen from F/S and this is no exception. At first I thought this piece was not light enough to be "handkerchief" but after two washings it lightened up. I make very simple tops and pants which have become the only things I wear in the Texas heat. The color is a perfect neutral and a great background for my "interesting" jewelry.

Amy profile image Slubs are normal

I had to add this review to balance out the 4-star review given by another reviewer. Slubs are completely normal and a sign that the linen has not been chemically altered. This should give it five stars. It's not an imperfection!

Very soft Fabric & weight

Used this fabric to sew undergarments, it is slightly stretchy on the bias, nice feel against the skin, not heavy, easy to sew once I figured it out. But it has some thicker twiggy bits in it that can be scratchy, I try to pull these out. It would get 5 stars if was perfectly smooth.

Pillowcases, with about 3 inch hem, used a wing needle to hemstitch. Used a serger for the first seam, then a 3/8" seam on the sewing machine to finish the french seams. These are a gift for a friend. The handkerchief linen is very soft, and make lovely pillowcases.

This time I chose a ruffle dress from AYOminipatterns. This dress can be worn in summer or winter. Linen fabric is perfect for this project. In the second version, the fabric is lightweight natural linen, I added embroidery in the front, I really love embroidery and have been adding it everywhere lately. You can use contrasting linen to achieve interesting and beautiful combinations.

This skirt is the Jemma pattern from Fibre Mood issue#19.

Time for a new summer nightgown so I was super excited when this natural handkerchief weight went on sale. The machine embroidery added just the right touch.

Audrey • April 29, 2017

This is my second linen nightgown after years of not sewing at all. I patterned it after Japanese-style linen dresses I saw on the internet. I threw out all my old nightgowns and now sleep IN linen, ON linen, BETWEEN linen-- I LOVE LINEN!!!

Ivy • January 3, 2016

I made a bunch of dinner napkins from this lighter weight linen in 'Natural.' The linen is lovely and the color, while not really my style, goes well with some new reversible placemats that I made recently. This was a Doggie Bag deal and I'm very happy with the results!

Jedi Wrap Dress (or unisex robe) After much deliberation I finally chose the most classic color of all for my first project of Fabric-Store handkerchief linen: Natural. It was darker than expected (though I'd ordered at least 15 color swatches, Natural wasn't one of them & I didn't want to wait any longer!). But I love it; I'd actually describe it as a greyed-khaki, only better, as it has the varigated tones within that a true fully-dyed khaki wouldn't. I also believe it will turn out to be a much more "forgiving" color than the light-natural I was imagining. The garment: I have been a "Japanophile" since I can remember and started making unconventional kimonos and kimono-inspired clothing since about 1980. I wanted a breathable summer dress so it was "natural" for me to incorporate the lines of a favorite wrap skirt. When I first put on the very pale yellow cotton prototype for this dress I used a black leather belt and it made me think of Star Wars.

Here's an applique I made from your linen in 2008.

Julianne • February 4, 2011

I used natural IL020 for this prayer shawl (I named *Ancient Ways*, IL019 blue bonnet for the stripes underside lining and IL020 bleached white for the middle stripes and corners . This is my most popular design. my customers have told me many times it captures the heart. and I know why... the natural un-dyed Linen gives an old fashioned look and is excellent for making tunics, caftans and any garment you are desiring to have the "natural" old fashioned look with a crisp clean style.
