Russian Romantic painter Ivan Aivazovsky was entranced by the wild, untameable energy of the sea, painting it in bruised blue and purple tones punctuated by white moonlight. ABYSS linen recalls the deepest tones in Aivazovsky's brooding seascapes, a rich indigo that suggests tempestuous, brewing drama.

At a lighter weight of 3.5 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is woven with finer threads to give it a smoother appearance. Referred to as lightweight or handkerchief linen, this fine, but surprisingly sturdy linen brings new meaning to the term "sheer elegance".

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Hi! Would this color be close to indigo? I'm looking for a color similar to indigo (purple/blue). If you could let me know I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

Yes, this fabric is a deep right blue with slight purple undertones that resembles indigo.

Which of FS's medium wt colors is closest to Abyss? I am very happy with the Abyss which I have for a blouse and cami. I would like to make a medium wt skirt of a similar color. Thanks.

Sure thing! the closest match in our medium weight is the Medieval Blue which you can find here: fabrics-store.com/fabrics/linen-fabric-IL019-medieval-blue-softened-middle

Just received my Abyss linen. It is gorgeous!! I purchased this color and the sewing pattern from Kelly's post, McCalls 8115, because it was instant love at first sight! However the fabric is much darker than her picture shows, even when viewed outside in sunlight. Do you think she discharged the fabric first, to lighten it or is that color something else you carry and she posted the wrong color name? How exactly do you safely discharge linen? And if it matches another color, do you still carry it? Both colors are devine, but I also love the shade of the top in that post! I will just have to make several tops! THANKS for any leads and advice. I have some of your fabric softener, will running it several times thru a soak and wash cycle help lighten the original color?

hello, we would say the color is showing up lighter due to a combination of lighting and differing colors on monitors. Our fabrics are quite colorfast, so 'discharging' the color won't do much to fade it. We recommend checking our offering of fabrics we have in stock now since new colors and restocks happen frequently, so our color offering is always changing.

Wow! IL202 Abyss

Wow! Got my order couple days ago. Only now took it out of the plastic wrap. I say again, wow! Love the color! I donʻt have anything in mind to make just yet. But I was interested in the color when I saw past postings. Now that itʻs available again, I just had to have it!

Wonderful surprise

I have bought a lot of the 19 weight linens to make tunic topics but did not buy the 20 weight because I was concerned it would be too light weight and transparent (see through). I have a dress pattern I want to make but the 19 linen is too heavy and doesn't drape as loosely as I want for a dress. This fabric weight is absolutely spot-on for a dress. It is not "see through;" it is soft and has a beautiful free flowing drape, and is a luscious color. Colors are hard to figure out online. This is dark blue so if you want a "navy blue" that still looks blue this is the color for you. Someone described it as the night sky. VanGogh-ish night sky, definitely. A touch of deep purple in it, very nuanced. If I held this fabric up for someone and said, "what color is this?" they would probably say "navy blue." It is simply beautiful.

Abyss Bliss

I recently picked up a doggie bag of Abyss, and was plann-ing to make a short tunic top. It was an absolute delight to sew, and I decided to purcha-se two more yards of it so that I could make a copy of a late Egyptian/Roman style tunic. I must say this is my new fave fabric, as it is so soft, easy to hand-sew, and a pleasure to work with. I love it!!!!! It's perfect for our hot/humid climate here in Florida, and is a lot of fun to use. I give it five stars!

First of all, I have to mention that I did not sew this gorgeous linen coat. I don't really know how but I do have lots of ideas that I took to my seamstress for her to make a pattern and complete my dream coat in this drop-dead gorgeous colour. I kid you not! I work with colours all day and when I saw this I thought how absolutely rich and fab it was. That was before I saw it in real time.OMGoodness it is so beautiful. Beatles inspired cuffs, pleating in front and back with unfinished rough edges, vintage and retro buttons haphazardly placed and an owl button I have had for years was placed at the back top edge. There is no collar that is perfect to wear one of my art scarves in 100% linen. They have art that I have created on them. This scarf is "We Go Together Like Peanut Button And Jam" The lighter accent on the cuff also shows inside when the coat blows open at the front and this is also linen from Fabrics-store.com. I will never let the fact I was never good at "Home Ec" stop me from creating something artsy to wear and I love love love linen!!!!!

Stunning shade of dark indigo purple

Please: more weights for this color! It's a perfect match for the Nico camisole, but a heavier weight (ahem, 4C22) would give the longer pieces the drape they should have. And this color wants to be a Nico dress SO badly!

Abyss Is The New Black!

No-It is not black, but a deep, deep indigo with a slight purple cast. If only FS made this color in every weight, I would use it for EVERYTHING. As it is, I plan to make a button down shirt with what I have. It is a lovely sheer weight that would lend itself to weightless summer garments. Absolutely beautiful!

This color is phenomenal.

I can't wait to sew up a Chelsea Tee shirt out of this beautiful color. I got it in a two-yard doggie bag to see if I liked both the weight and the color, and both are excellent. Here's hoping F/S will add different weights in this gorgeous tone. I prefer to sew my linen with 100% cotton thread whenever possible, and for those who need to see the color prior to purchase, or are looking to match a thread, Gutterman color 6190 is an EXACT match. I just finished the cut edges to run the fabric through the wash, and had to find a window to see the stitches - and even then it was hard to discern them!

I used Abyss IL020 to make Simplicity 9783 blouse. It is the perfect weight and drape for this blouse. It looks more navy blue to me but has a hint of purple in some lighting. I posted this because I love seeing what other people sew.

This is handkerchief wt abyss (left) and mid wt medieval blue (right) hanging out on the line with today's laundry. The two colors are very close. The abyss looks to me to be just a tad darker and slightly more purple than medieval blue. Both fabrics are more blue, less purple than they appear on the screen of my phone. That's a white sheet hanging behind the linen. Abyss is see-through. I plan on making a gathered sleeve blouse and a matching camomile to wear under it.

Janet • November 16, 2023

I absolutely love the deep color of this fabric, and it sewed beautifully. The pattern is the Ballad Blouse by Love Notions

Patricia • October 28, 2023

This is an absolutely gorgeous shade of blue that reminds me of a dark night sky. This fabric handles like raw silk and feels like butter. I'm so impressed. I made McCall's 8115, a dolman faux wrap top with a 1/4" wide piece of elastic in a casing made from the back waist seam allowance. I hope my friend likes it! I will be ordering more of this weight and finish of linen for myself for summer tops.

Of course, I felt the need to show the right cuff area. The left one is three different buttons with a heart, open daisy and Celtic symbol. But how fun is "ART" on the right cuff made from vintage typewriter keys? Total fun for a full-time artist!!!

I used this fabric to make the Myosotis Dress by Deer and Doe. This fabric gathered but really easy and provides a nice amount of drape with the right amount of structure. I'm definitely going to be living in this linen this summer.

Lauren • May 14, 2021

I used this lightweight fabric for Fabrics-store's Charlie Dress pattern. I pre-washed the fabric twice using the recommendations from the Help Center and it came out so soft. It was really easy to sew with, and is lovely, light, and breezy.

Lauren • May 14, 2021

Abyss tank cut on the bias. Am about to make a matching "sweater" to go with it for wearing to work on hot summer days. I cannot express how much I am in love with this color!!
