British 19th century painter John Constable painted the British landscape as a place of wild and unspoiled wonder, revelling in its curling old trees, mud-soaked ground and billowing, cloud-filled skies. He was fascinated by nature in all its grubby, dirty reality and often honed in on details other might choose to ignore or omit, like unruly tangles of bracken, watery ditches and abandoned old outhouses hiding in the shade, celebrating the quiet wonder of these secluded spots so far from city life. Dusty shades of brown like SHITAKE appeared in many of his most celebrated paintings, coloring damp wooden structures, old boats, tree branches and grubby areas of mud and soil, capturing the visceral appeal of being entirely absorbed in nature. He wrote, "Landscape is my mistress - 'tis to her I look for fame."

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Is the shiitake brown cooler or warmer than the cognac?

The Shitake is a flatter cool color in comparison to the Cognac.

Beautiful brown!

I absolutely love this brown. It is a good soft "natural looking" brown. I made a dress out of this that gives nice earthy cottagecore vibes.

Classy

Thank you so much for bringing this color back! I was making capris and bemoaning the fact I didn't have enough for slacks. Classy is the best way to describe this color!

Shitaki

I plan to use this brown for appliqués on aprons. It is a wonderful rich brown, quite close to avocado stone covering, but not quite that dark, but that will be from the scraps left over from capris! I'll post a picture of when I finish them! J

Megumi profile image Love this cool brown!

I got two yards of this new color from Doggie Bag. Very versatile cool brown and I really like it! It happens to go with the bedding in my son's room so I made a couple pillowcases for him.

I made a simple sleeveless overdress out of the shitake brown fabric. I love it! (the green underdress is made of the Olive branch softened fabric - also a favorite).

I used this fabric for an Estuary Skirt by Sew Liberated. It is by far the comfiest thing I own, now, and I want to wear it every day!

Pillowcases in this calming brown Shiitake.
