EGGPLANT linen's rich plum tone bled into Marc Chagall's whimsical scenes, coloring them with stains as tart and ripe as fresh blackberries. Impassioned purples came to embody the hue of life and love.
Inventive color was a vital strand in his fantastical scenes, taking his famous floating lovers, animals and musicians further from the realms of reality into a wondrous, escapist dream. He wrote, "Colour is everything, colour is vibration like music; everything is vibration."

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.

As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

What is ‘base cloth width'? The term is used continually to describe shrinkage but I've not found a measurement that seems reasonable!

Good afternoon! Excellent question. The base cloth width is the width you see in the product description. In this specific instance - IL019 linen base width is 59" wide. After we weave the fabric, it is then dyed and softened. The dyeing and softening process shrinks the fabric from its original width. Therefore, IL019 Eggplant Signature Finish will be slightly narrower due to the shrinkage the fabric had while being dyed and finished after being woven.

The best finish of linen I've ever sewn!

Using the Signature Finish IL019 eggplant linen is my first experience with this finish. I have been a devoted Fabrics-Store.com customer for many years, working with almost all their types of linen, and this one is now my new favorite. Being a linen snob, I also have worked with linen fabric purchased from other places as well. I can now say that I agree with F-S that it is super soft, and am amazed at the difference in wrinkling between this and all other linens I have ever used. It barely wrinkles!

Trapeze Dress

I added 4" to length. Made size 8-10. It was perfect. Only needed to take in the arm holes in slightly. I also made this dress in black linen and natural linen. I used the blog and the pattern instructions. I suggest you do both. I will definitely be making more. Love my dresses. Thank you for the free download.

Lovely colors and so pliable and stable.

I love working with this stuff. It creases and folds and drapes so well. A very satisfying medium.

Love this color!

This eggplant color is gorgeous! Not sure what I'll make with it, but it will be scrumptious.

Kirsten profile image one of my favorite colors

what can i say? Eggplant is not as dark as i would normally call an eggplant purple, but its a great deep purple (red tone)... it washes like a dream (all the fabrics store linens do) and its a great shade to coordinate with a lot of other rich jewel tones without being too bright or too loud.

Perfect

This is a wonderful color and the fabric didn't fade at all when I pre-shrunk it.

Beautiful feeling, light but sturdy fabric

I love the texture of this fabric. I pre-washed it prior to sewing and it's incredibly soft. The drape is lovely. I found it a bit more vibrant in colour than the photograph, more like a jewel-toned eggplant, but I really enjoy the vibrancy and richness of colour. It sews up beautifully and feels luxurious to wear.

SO PRETTY

This fabric is so lovely. It's buttery and soft when washed. The color match in the photo is pretty true to reality. I can't wait to sew with it

Photographers will love this one

In muted natural light this color has great depth. The fabric has a nice lay to it creating soft-edged folds.

Alicia profile image Beautiful and soft!

This fabric is true to color. Very nice shade of eggplant. Very soft to skin when washed. Easy to work with; however, I found that it does fray easily. It doesn't wrinkle as bad as expected with linen. Will certainly recommend!

I love the color. It feels somewhat stiffer than other fabrics in this finish and weight, but I still love it. McCalls 7920.

What a wonderful color, love my dress. I had a simple black dress that is so comfortable to wear and wanted an identical one in a lovely color so I made this one out of that one. It is a simple sleeveless A-line dress with French seams and same fabric binding on neck and armholes. The front has five pleats that elevate the dress to a more interesting style.

Signature finish IL019 Eggplant: Glorious purple colour but not too flashy. I didn't find I needed a lining for this wrap dress. Linen is so rewarding to sew with. Even though I could have done better with fitting, I still love this project because of the fabric.

FS free pattern, Agustina with a slight curved hemline. Made with IL019 Eggplant FS Signature Finish. My 4th Agustina! Love the pattern! Love the fabric!

This eggplant fabric was a dream to work with. I love this gored skirt with the flippy hem!

Bonnie • January 14, 2023

I made this rub-off of an Old Navy linen skirt using eggplant IL019 Signature Finish linen. It's too bad the eggplant color is now sold out because it is beautiful. The Signature Finish is my absolute favorite fabric to work with now after this project. This picture was taken after I had worn the skirt for 2 whole days, doing errands, in and out of the car, walking all over town, and it still looks fresh with hardly any wrinkles. It's also super soft and the most comfortable fabric to wear that I've ever experienced. The cut of this skirt is unlike any that I have ever seen in the 19 years since I bought it. None of my pattern design books show gores of this shape. That contributed to its charm and its challenge.

Kimono jacket made with the eggplant linen, and trimmed with Kaffe Fassett cotton on the sleeves and front bindings. Very comfortable to wear, with minimal wrinkling. It was a pleasure to cut and sew this fabric.

Jenny • February 28, 2022

This fabric has beautiful colors and wonderful malleability.
