IL019 ASPHALT Softened - 100% Linen - Middle (5.3 oz/yd2)
Our best selling Grey for many years, this slightly faded version brings a vintage vibe to a tried and true color. ASPHALT
linen mimics the tone of Vicken Parson's cool, mid-grey shadows, a color
suggesting the concrete pavements, rain soaked bricks and hardened metal
of the urban jungle.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces, this 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

I learned from other reviews that it's so important to zigzag stitch the cut edges before washing linen. You'll be amazed to find NO threads tangled up and fabric stretched out of shape. I love this asphalt softened for the color, feel and ease of handling. I made a couple tops, a shift and many bath/kitchen scrubbies. You can see my garments and artwork on Instagram robertawallaceart.com
Love this color however it it a shade lighter than the picture.
I love this fabric which was the best investment for a quality, custom-made sheet set. I live in southern Mexico where tropical heat and moisture make it difficult to have comfortable bed clothes. This linen is perfect bedding material. I purchased a bolt of IL019 Asphalt Softened Middle and cut into manageable lengths for the preshrunk process. I recommend washing and drying 3 cycles. This will ensure fabric is shrunken, the weave is tight and the lint is removed. To make two flat sheets, I cut 2 equal lengths for each sheet, cut one length in half so to stitch vertical seams along each selvage edge versus a center seam. I allowed sufficient drape so sheet can be used as coverlet or tucked in. All edges were flat-felled and outer edges are 1 inch mitered. I also stitched up 4 pillow shams. To complete this project, I hand stamped foilage from an orchidea tree in acrylic paint along 1 edge of top sheet and 1 side of the pillow shams. Note: it may take a few washings to soften the painted fabric. I flip shams to unpainted side for sleeping and warm wash and line dry the bedding, which becomes softer and more comfortable with each washing. I am excited to start planning my next set of bed clothes, and have made a pair of matching drawstring pants for my husband. Can't say enough good about this fabric.
What a joy to find fabrics-store and order beautiful colors of linens to create hand-stitched items for my home! The extravagance of everyday items like kitchen towels in beautiful fabric feeds my soul. My 3 yards of IL019 softened asphalt color arrived today and I can't wait to make dinner napkins in this medium gray. The weight and color is perfect for my project. After washing, I'll skip the ironing and enjoy the luxurious bouncy density of them on my dinner table for holidays or any occasion!
The color of this linen is absolutely perfect! It looks especially good with a bright white blouse, but also with a number of others in my closet. I've already ordered more of this linen in a variety of other colors and cannot wait to brighten up my wardrobe! I may never sew with anything else. In fact, my husband has accused me of developing another addiction!
I used this linen to finish the slipcovers for a sleeper couch. The weight was heavy enough for the back cushions. It's a lovely grey and not very nubby.
Very soft. Beautiful color, a neutral so the dress I made will look great with a variety of accessories. This was not my first purchase from here for linen. So happy with all the linen I have gotten.
One of my favorite colors. It's so easy to pair with other colors.
Beautiful linen and love this color as well. Can not wait to use!
I absolutely love this linen. The weight and feel of the fabric is so beautiful and it is wonderful to sew. Even my husband commented how nice the fabric is. The color is a wonderful shade of gray. Highly recommend fabrics-store for all your linen needs!
made the no tie apron pictured... will make more!
I love this linen. It does not wrinkle like most other linens I have owned. It is easy to sew with and makes great tops, pants, dresses, just about anything you could want. It also washes beautifully.
First time order...love it! I used it for some journal covers I make. I love to pair linen with other fabrics- mostly quilting cottons and this was the perfect weight. I think the covers look fab.
The weight , the color, great product, I cut the pieces washed them and complete my design, the results amazing.
I've used this fabric to make so many items and it looks beautiful in all of them. I screen printed it, for towels, and it looks great. All items have just improved with repeated use and laundering. Another great fabric!! Thank you.... what a great place to buy linen.
Absolutely adore this fabric! The gray is a perfect shade and the drape is heavenly. There are a few slubs and the first few washings shed lint enough to fill the dryer vent, but that is to be expected with linen and it stops eventually. If you can't deal with that then reconsider purchasing linen. This fabric in no way disappointed me and I've already ordered more for towels. My first project with it was a full length bathrobe. I want to just wear it all day. Pure comfort. Hubby loved it so much I ordered the Strong Blue for a robe for him too! Thank you for a fabbo product and I will be ordering again. Saved to my favorites! :D
This is the first time I have purchased fabric from this site. The fabric is gorgeous. The color jumped off the page and begged me to buy some. I am so glad I did. I will be making a pair of pants.
just perfect. I used for making a new upholstery for a sofa.
A true cool medium gray, more like cement than asphalt. No nubs to speak of. Very nice fluid drape after washing.
This was my first order at Fabrics-Store.com. The linen was beautiful and easy to work with. I will definitely order more in the future.
I had been looking for a real grey linen, most I ordered were more brown? This is nice and if deeper grey is desired the monument is perfect.
I made a duna cover and two pillowcases with ashphalt linen and it's incredible to sleep in. Easy to sew, I want them in every colour now! The only reason gave it 4 stars, not 5, is because it's not wide enough without having to add material.
I ordered your IL019 Linen for the first time. It is such high quality and amazing to work with. I am begging you to add more colors to your Linen/Cotton blend, I would love to work with it in Asphalt!
I wish the fabric had been the blue-gray linen that the thumbnail showed, but I still love it even as a true gray. sadly, this website won\'t let pictures be uploaded right now, here is a photo
I sewed slipcovers for an old Ikea sleeper couch that had seen better days (cats and children can really wear things out). The original sofa did not come with a slipcover option. I actually used the heavier weight 4C22 ASPHALT Softened for most of the couch. I had some left over from a couple of years ago for a larger living room couch. As that was sold out, I purchased this medium weight to finish the back cushions which is fine as they don't get as much wear and tear. The color is a very good match and it is easy to unzip and throw in the washer and dryer to clean. Remember to always preshrink your fabric before sewing.
I made some curtains with this asphalt medium weight linen. It was a bit sheer for our liking so I my husband and I came up with a fun way to add some interest to the curtains. I lined them with a printed fabric so when the sun shines in the window you get a glimpse of the print. A simple project but the linen was easy to work with and I really like the color!
Dust ruffle out of IL019, asphalt. Took 7 yards of linen and took a day to make it. I recently got some of those risers to put under the bed legs and the bed needed a dust ruffle after that (to hide the junk stored under there)! Made the quilt last winter out of cotton. Now waiting for more linen to arrive today to make curtains out of. Sewing this linen IS addicting...be warned!
I made this simple sleeveless shift dress then did a black gradient dye on the bottom. So comfortable and easy to wear. Casual but just a little dressy too. Fabric is heavy enough for cooler weather when layered with a long sleeve shirt. I prewashed in warm water and dried completely in the dryer. Plenty of lint. Shrinkage as expected. Soft with a nice drape.
I also made a summer cover (an oversized sheet) for when it's way too hot to function. I cut two lengths of 84"x54" (my fabric width after pre-shrinking), then cut the second piece in thirds. Then, I just used French seams to sew a small panel to either side of the large panel (with one 84"x18" panel left over for other projects), then hemmed. Super easy!
Reclaim Humanity is a upcycle Gallery located in Encinitas, Ca and one of specialties is upcycling unwanted furniture. This ungodly sofa was covered with a green fabric and dark wood trim stain one it's way to the dump. After a little with a beautiful linen and white wash wood trim, this was the result! reclaimhumanity.net
My first set of king size pillowcases and I love them! The cuff is the bleached/softened and the accent band is the sea green/softened. Both of those were doggie bag purchases to see if I liked them and of course I do. The sea green is what I'd call a true Teal and it's gorgeous. Just something else to add to my must-have-more-of list! Thank you for such a lovely product.
