Darkness pervades Tacita Dean's artworks, falling over craggy rocks and epic mountains into inky, bottomless wells. BLACK Linen shares Dean's endless black, a colour that intensifies mystery and drama, cloaking and concealing everything it touches.

At a lighter weight of 3.5 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is woven with finer threads to give it a smoother appearance. Referred to as lightweight or handkerchief linen, this fine, but surprisingly sturdy linen brings new meaning to the term "sheer elegance".

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

This is a true black whereas Anthracite is more of an off black.

it means per square yard. It is the method by which fabrics weights are measured.

How sheer is this? I'm thinking about making a blouse of this to wear over a blue heaven Il19 underdress and am wondering how much the blue will show through.

Catherine • September 15, 2023

This fabric is not sheer.

How strong is this fabric? I'm looking to make regency short stays out of it, so I need it to be really sturdy, but I want it to be breathable and light weight.

I saw where someone had significant change in color. Since it is black does it change color a lot. I understand over time it will but it sounded like with the first washing.

When washing using our recommended washing instructions and a free and clear style detergent, we don't experience a difference in color.

Light but not Cheap or Dinghy!

This is my first light linen and I must say it is equal in quality to the heavy and medium I purchased before this. So excited to make a smock or something. Mostly I just like to sit and stare at it on my worktable, it is just so pretty that my whole room looks nicer with it there waiting for a project. The color did not bleed when I washed it cold/delicate and then light dry until damp. Then laid our flat to dry the rest of the way. Perfect drape.

Beautiful fabric!

I love this beautiful fabric and I am beyond pleased with the dress I made with it. The fabric arrived so quickly after I ordered it. It was wonderful to work with and the stitches are just beautiful on this fabric. I made myself a dress for my birthday.

Faded and softened significantly after one wash

I bought 9 yards of this for many projects. It started with a densely pressed feel and sheen with a deep black color. I followed all washing instructions carefully. It came out utterly softened and at least 2 shades lighter- a dark ish gray. I expect linen to gradually softened over time, part of why we love it, but this made me think the fabric will disintegrate far too quickly over time. I am hesitant to order again.

I am sorry to hear that the linen is not as expected. I will email you directly to discuss how we might be able to find a solution to this issue.

Amazing to sew

I made the closet core patterns pietra shorts and this fabric is perfect. I was apprehensive that is would be see through but it isn't when the garnet is on. The fabric is delicate yet very strong. I am planning on making the linen tank top with the fabric-store pattern.

Lovely Fabric

Am just discovering the joy of hand-stitching and wearing 100% linen garments. I'm collecting Fabrics-store patterns and lightweight lined - haven't enjoyed sewing this much in forever - both Fabrics-store patterns and linen fabric are excellent quality.

I used two yards for a dress length version of the Agustina top. Will definitely be making again in another color

Summer is in full swing and if you're like me, sometimes you just want to change it up and even out your strappy tank top tan lines (or you just want to feel a breeze on your back on a hot sunny day). I came across a ready-to-wear dress with a similar strappy backless feature and knew I wanted to try and make my own simplified version in lightweight linen (IL020). This dress is really just a collection of rectangles, featuring a strappy back tie situation with reinforcing cinch ties at the upper bust in front, and the under bust and waist line in the back. The skirt is two-tiered, but can be modified to be single tier or even up to a four-tiered bottom, if wanted. Sew House Seven Romey blouse requires a soft, light weight linen and this fits the bill. The gathers in the peplum and sleeve are soft and drape well in this fabric.

Very Easy Very Vogue pattern. Criss-cross back with 6 one-inch red vintage buttons down the back of the skirt. Beautiful birthday dress! I will definitely order from fabrics-store.com again Thank you!
