IL019 All-purpose Insignia Blue Softened - 100% Linen Fabric - Medium (5.3 oz/yd2) - 20.00 Yards, Width 58"
The inky depths of INSIGNIA BLUE linen seeped dark stains into Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai's
evocative landscapes, lending them deep bass tones that hum with melodic
resonance.
The color, known today as Prussian, or Berlin blue, swept
across Europe in the 18th century, causing what some called a "blue fever", as it infiltrated painting, wallpaper prints, stamps and
even the Army Uniform for the Prussian military.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Excellent color and weight for medieval tunic
So far - after discovering you & your incredible linen fabrics - I've been spending all of my time & money just collecting a variety of pieces! They are all beautiful & I look forward to sewing with them. But I have no garments or items yet to show.
I LOVE this linen. I will be making an artist's smock and a dress from this lovely blue color. The feel of this fabric is amazing and inspirational.
Always check the pictures that people post of their washed linen, because it does get lighter as you wash it. This is why I bought it, however. I will try to post a photo of my linen which was washed on warm and tumble dried on medium.
For the Lily pattern, I chose the dress view to create a look I was inspired by at the Vintage Market in Palm Springs. It's modeled on a classic desert caftan or Tuareg tunic popularized in the 70s but with a modern, minimalist approach. I chose this blue in homage to the Saharan daraa or boubou that have been worn in captivating shades of blue since the nomadic peoples of those regions began trading in indigo.
This is a tunic pattern cut on the bias. This linen is perfect for it. I ordered the IL019 INSIGNIA BLUE Softened. I love the structure that this fabric gives the finished tunic. It is a dream to cut and sew and I love the way it drape and the color. . In the Florida climate, it is just right.
This linen is perfect for Sashiko stitching. First, its opacity conceals the stitching on the reverse side. Second, it is sturdy enough to withstand the constant handling required with the embroidery work. Its best feature is its soft and buttery feel, which provides little resistance as the needle travels back and forth through the fabric. It was simple tactile pleasure holding it in my hands while stitching, and this greatly increased the meditative effect that comes with embroidery.
