IS010 Waffle Cobalt Softened - 54% Linen / 46% Cotton Fabric - Medium (6.2 oz/yd2) - 20.00 Yards, Width 84"
Dark, brooding and dramatic, the intense blue of COBALT linen
was ideal for Renaissance painter Jacopo Vignali's heightened, operatic
scenes.
A leading painter in the Florentine Seicento, Vignali's Baroque
paintings were defined by flowing swathes of jewel-toned fabric in
midnight blues and crimson reds; set amidst theatrical, directional
light, these richly toned colors amplify the romantic agony and tragedy
of his stories.
Fluffy, dimensional, and simply a joy to live with - you’ll feel like a
sewing maestro when you pull this cloth out of its first dry cycle.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Customer Questions and Answers
Hello! I line dry my laundry, I don't own a dryer because my climate is so good for drying. Will this linen toweling make the same dimensional effect if it's dried on a laundry line, or does it need to be dried in a clothes drier? Thanks!
Yes, the fabric will become textured after washing. If line drying, try to dry draped over multiple lines as the fabric has some stretch .
I'm having a hard time getting the tensions right on this fabric. I've tested using bright color thread and and an 80 needle and the top thread keeps showing on the bottom. I can get close but not perfect. Any tips? I have a high quality machine (Viking/Husqvarna Designer SE) and want to make a robe as a gift so I want to get it right.
If you're having trouble with your tension, we recommend using a strip of tear away between your fabric and the presser foot. especially when working with the washed fabric. Be sure to check your machine manual for their tension tips since all machines are different. If all else fails, change for needle, and re-thread your machine.
How much to make a small bath robe?
We used 4.5 yards for our small sized Capucine Robe pattern in the waffle weave fabric.
How much does the fabric shrink? What is the approximate new dimension of the 84" width? Does the fabric shrink equally in the warp and weft?
This cloth is wider than our usual selection at 84" wide. Once it is washed - the cloth will shrink to get that dimensional waffle surface. Approximate shrinkage - the width of cloth shrinks 17% (weft of the fabric) and 28% on the length ( warp of the fabric). Shrinkage is based on a warm wash and low-heat dry.
To make a king size blanket, assume there are 2 seams (one length and one length cut in half) - how do you suggest finishing seams? If using a binding, which coordinating fabric would be a good choice?
We recommend a felled seam or flat felled seam. For more information about sewing with the waffle weave fabric, please see our helpful article on the topic here: support.fabrics-store.com/hc/en-us/articles/4422004938381-Sewing-with-your-IS010-Waffle-Weave-Fabric
I used the waffle fabric to make towels. I washed them after sewing. The fabric is not soft at all. It is rough and would not want to use that towel on my face. My question. Is how do you get it soft and stay soft? You sell the softener. Do I use that once or every time I wash them to keep them soft?
Hello, The fabric will be soft after repeated washing and drying, we find the fabric is softer if you dry in the machine rather than air dry. To speed up the softening process, yes, you can use our softener. One application will soften the fabric considerably, and won't impact it's absorbency. You only need to use it once to feel results, and any time they start to feel crisp again, you can use it again for a top-up.
How many yds. Is necessary to make a blanket for a king size bed?
Hello, We recommend ordering 8 yards, and piecing 2 x 4yard lengths together to make a piece large enough to fit a king size bed.
I just bought the cobalt waffle weave, but I forgot to ask about shrinkage. How much might I expect, and will it continue to shrink with each washing? Thanks
The shrinkage in the width is 17 and 28 on the length using our cool to warm wash instructions low heat tumble dry
What is the minimum order for this fabric? thanks.
The minimum cut is 1 yard and we sell in 1 yard increments for all of our fabrics.
I want to use one of the 100% cobalt linens to make the shawl collar and cuffs of a robe made with this fabric. Which would you recommend?
We recommend our IL019 medium weight or IL020 lightweight linen for shawl collars and cuffs. These fabrics both come in Cobalt, and you can select your preferred weight based on personal preference or the one that will best suit your pattern.
I should pre wash before sewing though, correct?
If you are making our towel set, you should set first, then wash.
For the bath towel, can you use a double layer of fabric, to make them ultra-lux/thick?
The IS010 waffle weave is perfect fabric for the towel , towels after washing became super soft.
The IS010 waffle weave is perfect fabric for the towel , towels after washing became super soft.
What type of thread before washing do you recommend?
We recommend All Purpose' 100% Polyester threads like the Sew-All thread by Gutermann
If I want to make two bath sheets, how much fabric will I need?
You will need 3 yards for two bath sheets. Please email us if you would like a cutting diagram.
without using a dryer (I line dry everything) will I get the maximum dimensional effect of the waffle weave? Ie, is it primarily due to the washer or dryer that the "magic" happens?
Yes, this fabric's texture is activated through washing. So you can line dry your fabric, just be sure that the water is thoroughly wrung out and line dry mostly flat to avoid it stretching out under it's own weight.
I made 2 towels, 1 hand towel, 2 wash cloths and a drawstring bag to put a bar of soap in. (3 yards) Had enough to do another bag. I was so excited to watch this fabric "transform". Washed on Warm/Warm and dried on hot. Lots of lint in the trap but did not detract from the softness of the linen. And the results...Fabulous! Expecting a large amount of shrinkage and every piece was still larger than I thought it would be. I am so excited to give these as a Christmas gift but holding my excitement is so hard. I'm making 5 more sets for gifts. At the end I'll choose what color I want to make for myself. Sorry so long. Just love this waffle linen !
I made a robe using this cobalt, a little IL020 Blue Apatite for trim, and the blog pattern (blog.fabrics-store.com/2017/09/26/relaxed-linen-bathrobe-tutorial/). It was recommended to pre shrink the fabric, which I did. Working with such a dimensional cloth took some getting used to, but it wasn't impossible. Resulting robe makes me happy every morning.
I made the bath towels according to your directions, but skipped the washcloths and instead turned that into another hand towel. I love that the bath towels turned out large enough to wrap around me. They are so much more absorbent than regular cotton towels and dry quickly. The only issue is so much lint. I have washed them twice and still get lint when using them. It's not a big enough issue though. I love them!
IS010 Is one of my favorite fabrics! It feels like magic every single time I run a new piece through the wash. I ordered 3 yards each of cobalt and nine iron to make summer weight blankets for my husband and I and my son. 3 yards made a good size king coverlet, definitely wide enough, not quite long enough to fold over on the long edges, but covers us neck to toes while we sleep. Lovely weight for summer! Would love to make a kimono out of this, but my math skills are intimidated by calculating the shrinkage... Maybe that should be the next free pattern on your website!
Thanks for your review! If you're making garments with this fabric, we recommend washing the fabric first so you don't need to do that shrinkage math, and washing first will ensure none of your seams become rippled or warped in comparison to if you chose to sew first, then shrink.
I LOVE this fabric! I bought it to make a summer blanket to sleep with instead of my comforter because I get so hot in the summertime. I sewed it up and threw it in the washer and dryer and it came out incredibly fluffy/bubbly and SUPER comfy! I am absolutely in love with this blanket! But just a note - the first time you wash and dry this, it will produce a LOT of lint...but it's a small price to pay for an amazing blanket made from an amazing fabric!
I used this to make a shrug/wrap - turned out great! I love it! Super soft, and a heavier weight for a linen to make it cuddly. Note that the edges do fray worse than a standard weave due to the waffle weave. That's not a reason not to love this fabric, just perhaps zig-zag any raw ends that won't be seamed quickly. It made finishing with a narrow hem a bit tricky, but not unmanageable.
Very nice! I’d love to know what pattern that is if possible.
