Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.

As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

Is the bleached signature finish fabric prepared for dyeing?

Candace • May 6, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello, No, this fabric is not considered PFD, so you will need to pre-wash it with a 'pre-dye' detergent such as synthrapol to make it PFD.

Is this good for making bath towels and kitchen towels?? Is it absorbent as the other linens?

Tammie • September 19, 2022
Lauren profile image F|S Team

We prefer our 4C22 heavyweight which is the twin to our kitchen towel fabric, but in the wider width. We recommend this fabric in our Milos Bath Towel free pattern.

I am curious about your answer to the person who made sheets that got holes after 2 years. I bought some high quality linen sheets and had the same problem with the fitted sheet after just a year or so. I am considering this linen to make another fitted sheet but now uncertain. What linen do you recommend if I am going for longevity rather than the initial feel of the fabric? Is a heavy weight linen better for a fitted sheet?

Jamie • July 15, 2023
SS

If you want improved longevity, use a flat sheet for the bottom instead of fitted. Fitted sheets wear out more rapidly because of the body abrasion on them. Flat sheets that are rotated get equal wear and, therefore, last longer.

I purchased this linen in March of 2021, sheets were completed in Fall of 2021. I made two flat sheets, so that they could be alternated between top and bottom Now less than 2 years later, both sheets have huge holes in them. Considering that linen is touted to have a long lifespan, I am extremely disappointed. We loved the sheets, but because of a lack of durability I cannot justify making another pair from this type of linen. Would a heavier weight linen that hasn't been softened hold up longer? What would be your suggestion? Thank you.

Hi - I posted this question on March 25, and now have found that it has been removed, and I have not received any response. Wondering if this will take dye well? Wanting to ice dye linen to make a dress.

Several of our customers have used this linen with various dye methods with amazing results. We recommend testing the dye method with this linen before you start the project to make sure all is as it should be.

Is this fabric ready to dye? Thank you

Carol • October 7, 2023

This fabric is not PFD, so you will need to scour it. Please search for the IL019 with no finish, that variant is PFD.

Do you have this fabric in 90 inches wide? Not sure how this fabric is used for bedsheets if the width is 90 inches on a queen size flat sheet but the fabric you sell is only 59 inches wide. Thank you

Neus • August 4, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

hello, We do not have this fabric in wider widths. When making sheets you can sew panels together in such a way that they aren't felt when slept on. We have figured this all out for you in our free sheets sewing pattern. Please search 'sheets' on the site to bring up the free pattern.

can I really expect minimal shrinkage with this fabric? I still plan to pre-wash

Jean • August 29, 2022
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Yes you can expect less than 3% shrinkage as opposed to our other linens that have a 7-10% shrinkage rate. Yes we do recommend pre-washing this to remove the residual shrinkage.

If this is pre-shrunk, how wide is it in fact? How will I know how much to buy?

Mary • August 17, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

hello, this fabric is 59" wide and can still shrink up to 3% on the first wash and dry.

Lauren • August 17, 2023
Kathryn profile image

Super basic - As long as I am not planning to dye it, is there any reason to prewash your 'signature finish' (prewashed) linen fabrics? I just received my first shipment (and first ever purchase of linen fabric), and don't want to waste the water (I live in AZ) if prewashing isn't necessary.

Kathryn • June 30, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Since this fabric may still have minimal shrinkage of up to 3% it is a good idea to prewash if you are making garments and other projects where you need the measurements to be precise. Otherwise it is a good idea to pre-wash any fabric or clothing item to remove any debris or lint residuals from manufacturing and handling.

Will this fabric work for a tablecloth? How much should I allow for shrinkage? And, any suggestions to remove stains?

Sharon • November 12, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello, yes this is a great fabric for a tablecloth. The shrinkage is up to 3% when following our washing directions. We have our washing directions and stain removal tips available in our Help Center article here: support.fabrics-store.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000218543-Fabric-Care-Pre-washing-and-Washing-your-Cotton-and-Linen-Fabrics

Terrific linen

I purchased 10 yards of this linen - and beginning to make pillowcases for everyone in my family - using grosgrain ribbon as an accent color for each decor. Just finished two for my youngest daughter - her accent color is lime green. I love how soft they already are (and I didn't even use the special sauce that you can purchase here!) The finished size of the case is 29.5" X 16" wide. I actually made a mistake in cutting them out - so added on a 3" addition with the grosgrain ribbon accent. (it was 3" initially) 1/2" of the 1" ribbon is exposed. A happy accident. I have posted a pic as well

I've made several Agustinas in bleached 019sf and love them all. This one has a couple of little pleats in the front and are cute with the Tina Givens pants in rustic natural.

Very weak thread both on warp weft

Bought IL019 to make a dupe for my new retail store linen tablecloth of the same weight. I tried to pull threads on cut ends to even out the edges, but threads kept breaking! This is the weakest linen I have handled. It was impossible to pull the thread for the whole width of the fabric, thread breaking every inch. It is soft and pleasant, but not ideal for projects expecting durability.

Lauren

Hello, We're sorry you felt this linen was hard to pull a thread on. This is typical for linen fabrics as the linen threads which make up this fabric are not twisted (also known as plied) since they don't need it in order to be strong when woven into a fabric. This means the fact that the individual threads breaking when pulled is not an indicator of the strength and durability of the whole fabric.

The bleached blouse is ever-so-versatile, as the photos show, and I've worn it from touring to shopping to wearing it as a violinist in a symphony concert. These fabrics are a dream to sew with and they are much more comfortable than I ever thought they'd be. I'm slowly transitioning my wardrobe into all natural fibers, and these linens will be wearable in classic styles for many years to come!!

This is the first garment made with your medium weight linen; it was very easy to sew with; maintained much of the original softness and will continue to soften with wear. I have ordered additional fabric but have not had time to sew them yet. It's been a busy summer!
