Darkness pervades Tacita Dean's artworks, falling over craggy rocks and epic mountains into inky, bottomless wells. BLACK Linen shares Dean's endless black, a colour that intensifies mystery and drama, cloaking and concealing everything it touches.

At a heavier weight of 7.1 ounces this 100% linen is referred to as Rustic due to its more textured look and feel. Durable and perfect for projects that require just a bit more substance.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Customer Questions and Answers

How much % extra should I order to compensate for shrinkage? I plan to machine launder the linen in cold water before making into clothing.

For this fabric with the softened finish, we approximate 7% shrinkage when washing on a warm gentle cycle, and dryng on low.

We have customers that use both for this type pf project . The choice comes down to the construction of the bag you are making and the look and feel that you are wanting. Please take a look at the customer posts under the IL019 black signature finish and the 4C22 Black softened to see how their bags turned out.

Do I need to consider the need to have all patern pieces go in one direction when sewing on linen?

Sandra • October 11, 2022

Like with all fabrics, you will need to lay your pattern pieces on your fabric according to their grain line. Since this fabric doesn't have any prints, you won't need to worry about cutting some pieces 'upside down' since you won't have to match anything up.

4C22 Heavy Black Linen

I've bought this before for sewing pants. I plan to make a full length narrow leg version on the Pietra pants.

4C22 Heavy Black Linen

This is the absolute best! I made dress out of this linen several years ago just to try the weight. Unlike lighter weights, it doesn't wrinkle much. I wore it on an 8 hr. flight and arrived still feeling neat and pulled together. Worth every penny!

Sofa cover

I bought 10 yards of this heavy black linen to cover my sofa. It's the first thing I've purchased and am quite pleased with the fabric. I washed and dried it and it has a lovely soft but slightly crinkled surface. It has been quite easy to work with and drapes quite nicely.

Sun bleach/wear line down the center.

I ordered 15 yards of this to make a duvet and pillow cases, which I've completed. It wasn't until it was on the bed that I noticed the sun bleached line straight down the center and there's nothing I can do about it now. The top of the bolts must be exposed to sunlight somewhere. It's unfortunate, I've bought quite a bit from here but this was the first disappointing purchase.

Unhappy - dye lot looks washed out and faded after one wash

I've been ordering from fabric-store for years, and this was the second time I ordered this heavy black linen by the bolt. My last bolt was beautiful...even after washing it was beautiful, dark, with a sheen. This bolt was a total disappointment. When washed, it looked washed out and faded. Won't match any of my dark blacks because of the dullness. Not sure if I received a bad bolt, or if the supplier changed, but had to put all 20 yards to the side for something else, and all my projects are on hold. VERY unhappy...this represented a large investment, and both this and the blue I ordered (which was too light to be called "royal blue") were not up to the quality I usually expect from fabric-store.

I used this beautiful, crisp fabric to back and border my quilt. I love the contrast in color. It was a breeze to work with this fabric. And my quilt is cozy and breathable at the same time! Oh the wonders of Fabric-Store llinens! I am hooked!!!
