Vibrant, seductive and indulgent, crimson linen's entrancing hue brought pulsing lifeblood into Jan Van Eyck's iconic paintings. Red dye was rare and exotic in 15th century Europe, making it a potent symbol of luxury, wealth and prominence. In his real life portraits Van Eyck draped figures and interiors in this decadent red hue to signify their high society status, while his religious commissions tapped into red's ancient significance with spiritual characters bathed in glowing cardinal reds.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.

As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

is this a Christmas red?

This is a very classic Christmas red.

I want to use the crimson for a dress with a white for trim. Does the crimson bleed with washings. Not including the wash before I start cutting out the dress.

We recommend thoroughly pre-washing your crimson fabric before applying your white trim. To check that the crimson is not running and transferring any dye, you can throw it in the wash with a small piece of your trim to test. The dye will not run forever, so just make sure you have pre-washed thoroughly.

Stunning color

This is the prettiest purest red fabric I have seen in a long time. I bought several yards and hope to make a jacket of some sort (a tailored blazer would be nice!). Some have asked in questions if this is "Christmas red" and it truly is. It is a pure red, not harsh, and not retina-burning bright. Just a rich pure red. And this weight is always wonderful. I have mountains of this fabric and even a few pieces completed that I wear. I have more ambition than time. I hope to sew more this winter and start to whittle down my giant stash of linens. I love the feel and I love these linens ironed (some people prefer the scrunchy wrinkled look of un-ironed linen, not me). I am always happy with my linen purchases.

The quality of the fabric is perfect. I love this deep red color. I pre-washed the fabric to make an art project.

Beautiful perfect red

IL019 Crimson washes well. Shrinkage, but I always half dry my linen, then iron when it's slightly damp, so my shrinkage is minimal. All linen I've bought from Fabric store does have a handful of lint after drying, but is less after 3rd washing.

The Crimson FS Signature Finish is a positively sublime color - definitely a "Christmas red" yet a perfect red for year-round use. The fabric is so vibrant and so easy to work with. As I work on some skills I'll need for the Mariana Jacket (thinking I will use Wisteria), I used 2 yards of the Crimson, purchased via one of the sales, for the "Sewn Linen Jacket" from Purl Soho, pictured here (free pdf no longer on their website). The gorgeous color has me thinking of other items to make for both myself and others!

Inspired by the Heart's Desire Poets shirt.

I downloaded the Bella pattern from Tessuti fabrics. I really love the drape and feel. iL019 all-purpose Crimson

The traditional colors for Christmas outfits are white, red and green. I love these colors and try to use them for sewing clothes! I always use medium-weight linen, although I also really like linen fabrics of different weights, but I tend to use them for other purposes.

A girl's Christmas outfit using the wonderful medium weight 'crimson' linen and the 'bleached' 3.7oz white linen.
