Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.

At a lighter weight of 3.5 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is woven with finer threads to give it a smoother appearance. Referred to as lightweight or handkerchief linen, this fine, but surprisingly sturdy linen brings new meaning to the term "sheer elegance".

I would like to make my father-in- law some ACTUAL hankerchiefs! What would you reccomend?

This fabric or its softened counterparts are ideal for real handkerchiefs.

What percent weft and warp shrinkage can I expect from this linen? Thank you! Karyl McClellan

Karyl • September 11, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Hello, we have approximated 10% shrinkage on the warp of this fabric, there will be less than that on the weft.

I was thinking of using this fabric to line a dress (a woven poly blend that's sheer). Do you think it would work nicely? Thank you!

C • May 18, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Yes, this fabric is a great option for linings or even slips. I'd recommend looking for the 'softened' version of this color since it will be softer on the skin

I would love to make this. Pattern?? Where do I find this one? Also, do you sell the top i.e. straps, etc.? It's so pretty... and just what I've been looking for. Have no idea how much linen it takes. What can you share with me? Thanks very much. Mary Syro

I'm sorry.. I guess you assumed I was looking at the nighgown shown on your sale page. I don't know how much fabric it would take,,,, or the pattern number... and I really like the fabric she used to make the top and the straps. Do you sell that too?? I've never used the handkerchief linen... but it looks just like what I'd like to sew. Thanks in advance for your advice. Mary

Hello - is there a right side and wrong side to this fabric? There seems to be a slight difference, but not sure if I'm seeing it correctly. Thank you!

Charlotte • May 24, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

No, there is no right and wrong side to this fabric :) it is plain woven, bleached evenly on both sides, and any finishes are always applied to the entire fabric.

Hello, I bought 10 yards of this linen back on 4/21, I am now getting around to using is. I Have a question and laundering this linen. Under the fabric care section it states that once a garment is made to not launder again but dry clean. It also states to was in cold. I need to dye 3 yards and the dye says to use very hot water. I'm not sure what to do now. It is going to be used as a lining for a wool robe. Thanks in advance. Patrick

Hello, Under our fabric care section on this page it states that this fabric is machine washable in cold water. You can also wash in warm water to remove shrinkage. Once your garment is made it is still able to be machine washable. Dyeing in hot water is OK, we just don't recommend washing repeatedly in hot water as this can degrade the fibers in the fabric, greatly reducing its life.

Yes, this fabric can be used for drapery. The lightness of this fabric makes for beautiful light filtering and privacy.

Do you sell this by the bolt? What is the yardage per bolt and the price per bolt if you do. Thank you. Joy

Joy • June 10, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Yes we sell this by the bolt. The bolts are sold in 20 yard increments which you will find here with the price as well fabrics-store.com/fabric-bolts/linen-fabric-IL020-bleached-light-bolt20_00

How many yards are on a bolt?

Sarah • August 25, 2022
Maureen profile image F|S Team

The bolts are sold as 20 yards but are not pre-cut. For example if you needed 40 yards you would order 2 bolts and receive 40 continuous yards not 20 and 20.

Great for basic costume needs

I bought this fabric as it was recommended by Morgan Donner for a Tudor smock. I followed her tutorial and it turned out beautifully. I also had enough fabric for a kerchief and an 18th century cap for another costume. I still have some leftover fabric and I plan to use it all!

A great bright white, light-weight fabric. It's almost, but perhaps not quite see-through...although I've now dyed the fabric, so that probably helps. Like all linens, this fabric gets much, much softer with machine washing and drying.

I was confused i guess

The fabric is beautiful, no doubt about that, however, it is not nearly as thin as i thought it would be. I guess i dont' know what handkerchief weight is. I thought i would be something like cotton lawn. I will make a nightgown out of it anyway.

Beautiful

I washed and put on clothes line. Wow. I almost don't want to cut up. Can't wait to make a few summer slips. How do I add a photo

lovely and fine

This exactly what it purports to be: the sort of linen you would use for handkerchiefs, kerchiefs, shirts and similar items: fine thread, closely woven. I plan to use a lot of it as underlinings and linings for historic garments.

I followed Morgan Donner's tutorial for a Tudor smock and used the Tudor Tailor book for some it as well as a kerchief. I also was able to make a cap from Mill Farm Patterns for another costume.

I used natural dye on my Helen's Closet Ashton Top with the sleeves extension (in handkerchief -weight bleached linen). Now it's a light, slightly variegated pink shade!
