Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

I want to make a linen throw. What weight would be appropriate and should I make it two layers?

Debra • October 13, 2022
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Typically you can use any of our linens for a throw, but it will come down to the look, feel color or pattern you are wanting. Layering would depend on which linen you choose. Our specialty linens such as our IL028, IL002 and Jacquard linens are also used.

Perfect for everything

This is one of the linens I always try to have on hand in my studio. I mostly use it for my clothing line. It takes natural dyes beautifully.

Shopping Again!

It's beautiful fabric but too yellow and sheer for what I needed. Ordering a heavier weight!

I hand stamped bleached linen. Surface design possibilities are endless for embellishing white linen.

Patty • July 11, 2023

In July of 2022, I bought 6 yards of each of the yellow, orange and green IL084 Olivier stripes. My plan at that time was to make either placemats or towels or both for our new house. It was in November of 2022 when the house was finished and we were able to move in. At some point, I got the idea to use the fabric for curtains for our oversized pantry (aka Giganta-Pantry). This is the final result. With IL019 Bleached peeking through from the semi-sheer layer. Semi-sheer because that window faces south and gets a lot of the Texas sun.

Barbara • July 8, 2023

Used the Bleached IL019 for the "sheer" layer of our bedroom curtains. I wanted something not quite as sheer for this room. The outer curtain is IL019 All-purpose Cerulean Fs Signature Finish.

Block printing can be a fun way to experiment with textile design and add a little bit more flair to a project, especially if you're looking to add some complexity to a specific part of the garment. I've wanted to make the Matilda Dress pattern for a while, but was struggling to choose a fabric that wouldn't feel too overwhelming or too plain on a voluminous maxi dress. Block printing was the answer! I was gifted the All-Purpose 100% Bleached Linen, the perfect blank canvas for me to think about any patterns and colors. Despite having no finishes, it's quite soft with enough structure where the fabric wouldn't stretch or move too much while being sewn. It's also important to use a natural fiber like linen or cotton for block printing to ensure the ink stays.

A midweight bleached linen version of Lydia Naomis DreamFrock (was MilkmaidDress). Sewing it, I learned how to sew in a zipper, I reduced the cups about 80% and to be honest, it's one of my favorite makes ever. For me it's la dolce vita as a dress.
