Description:

Adaptive layering is something we feel can be practiced all year round. If you are looking for something light to throw on, or feel you need to add a little flair and colour to your warmer layers but still look effortlessly chic, then you probably need a duster!

What exactly is a duster you might ask? The original dusters were born in the late 18th century and were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from trail dust. Today, the word and style are so popular that ‘’duster’’ seems to refer to any number of styles – an overcoat, a shirtdress worn open, a painter's coat, etc. But the main feature that defines the style is the openness. To us, a duster is anything that you can wear open, a lightweight layer of clothing, falling mid-thigh to full length.

Our Faye duster pattern has a loose fit, maxi length, and open front. Styled with a neckband collar, two patch pockets, and a detachable belt with two belt loops, Faye has all the integral elements to create a perfect look. It is super easy to sew and would make a great addition to your handmade wardrobe. Lightweight and flowy, it adds a fashionable touch to any outfit while providing an extra layer of warmth.

Customer Questions and Answers

KE

Hi, could you make this using the ISO10 Waffle fabric? If so, how would you adjust the pattern to account for the fabric shrinkage? Or should you wash fabric before cutting? Thanks!

Easy sew

I made a short-sleeve version for summer. Easy to sew, but I found the underarm seams a bit clunky and didn't sit nicely.

I just completed my 6th Faye Duster. I've made two for myself and then for gifts. My most recent one, I made with 4C22 linen and used Derwent inktense pastels to create wearable art. I'm a new painter but lifelong sewist. I made this for a dear friend who encouraged me to paint and also introduced me to the inktense pastels and pencils that become permanent on fabric with applied with water

Perfect for a linen robe

I used Honey Blossom 4C22 Heavyweight for the Faye Linen Duster. The pattern is an easy sew, it runs true to size so if you want a roomier fit you should size up. I increased the seam allowances so I could make French seams.

Faye Duster

I made the Faye Duster for my adult daughter this year and it is beautiful! I would recommend using the heavier weight linen, especially in the light colors. I used the heavy linen and the weight is perfect.

Made the Faye Duster in the Wisteria all purpose linen. I considered using a heavier weight linen but I'm really happy with this weight, it's really nice for spring and summer. I usually wear a size M and I blended between the 4/6 and the 8/10 sizes. I probably could have gone with 8/10 for a nice roomy fit, but I am still quite happy with it.

Faye duster made into a robe in ISO10 waffle weave and ISO19 ceramic for the trim. I felt self trim would be too bulky. II cut a smaller size and graded out to my regular size below the bust area as others have said that area is too bulky. Pleated the sleeve into a band so it wouldn't catch on things and could be pushed up when needed. I don't like belts so I used snaps to close the front.

I love stepping out of the hot tub and into my Faye Duster. I used IS010 Bleached Waffle Linen Blend Fabric, and cut the pattern oversized to allow for fabric shrinkage.

front shot of duster - I made a medium since it's a gift but it's big on me since I'm a small
