Darkness pervades Tacita Dean's artworks, falling over craggy rocks and epic mountains into inky, bottomless wells. BLACK Linen shares Dean's endless black, a colour that intensifies mystery and drama, cloaking and concealing everything it touches.

At a heavier weight of 7.1 ounces this 100% linen is referred to as Rustic due to its more textured look and feel. Durable and perfect for projects that require just a bit more substance.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Will the color on this fabric discharge with Out White Brite or is bleach required? Interested in using it for a reverse dyeing project. Thanks!

Hello, We haven't tested this fabric with The out-white-bright product, so you will have to do an experiment and let us know. When bleaching this fabric, it will discharge the dye to a degree, but of course, bright whites can only be achieved with optical brighteners and can be tricky.

How much % extra should I order to compensate for shrinkage? I plan to machine launder the linen in cold water before making into clothing.

Elizabeth • May 22, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

For this fabric with the softened finish, we approximate 7% shrinkage when washing on a warm gentle cycle, and dryng on low.

Is this a good weight for tea towels?

Alice • December 7, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Yes, this is our recommended weight linen for tea towels. It has a lovely hand and absorbency. We loved our kitchen towels in this weight so much we offer it in a narrow width version IL084, which is 20" wide and all you need to do is cut your preferred length, then hem and you're ready to go!

Will the black linen fade a lot over time with washing? There's no window that has light that will fade them. I'm just wondering about the washing? It's going to be used as Spa cushion covers for a business which washes them often.

Robyn • March 20, 2024

Linen holds it color well with regular washing, but black will fade a little especially if washed very often. This is just the same as other natural fibers.

We have customers that use both for this type pf project . The choice comes down to the construction of the bag you are making and the look and feel that you are wanting. Please take a look at the customer posts under the IL019 black signature finish and the 4C22 Black softened to see how their bags turned out.

Do I need to consider the need to have all patern pieces go in one direction when sewing on linen?

Sandra • October 11, 2022
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Like with all fabrics, you will need to lay your pattern pieces on your fabric according to their grain line. Since this fabric doesn't have any prints, you won't need to worry about cutting some pieces 'upside down' since you won't have to match anything up.

I need to make 2 curtains; 31" wide X 48" long. I'm going to do a simple farmhouse type tie up valance with a pocket for the rod along the top. Do you think this heavy weight would be too heavy for that use? I don't want to line them but I do want them to provide some privacy for the windows.

Gigi • January 14, 2024
Lauren profile image F|S Team

The heavyweight can be used for this, but if you would like a fabric that will gather on the rod a little better while also providing privacy and light filtering, our IL019 medium weight is a lovely option as well.

LOVE the rustic linen!!

I made loose overalls in the natural and love them! So, when I saw the black, I had to buy it!! Beautiful fabric, easy to work on, and so comfortable to wear. My goal is to change out my wardrobe to only comfortable garments, that look great, make me feel great and have all the pieces go together! This rustic black fabric certainly fits into that need!! LOVE IT!!!!

4C22 Heavy Black Linen

This is the absolute best! I made dress out of this linen several years ago just to try the weight. Unlike lighter weights, it doesn't wrinkle much. I wore it on an 8 hr. flight and arrived still feeling neat and pulled together. Worth every penny!

Sofa cover

I bought 10 yards of this heavy black linen to cover my sofa. It's the first thing I've purchased and am quite pleased with the fabric. I washed and dried it and it has a lovely soft but slightly crinkled surface. It has been quite easy to work with and drapes quite nicely.

Sun bleach/wear line down the center.

I ordered 15 yards of this to make a duvet and pillow cases, which I've completed. It wasn't until it was on the bed that I noticed the sun bleached line straight down the center and there's nothing I can do about it now. The top of the bolts must be exposed to sunlight somewhere. It's unfortunate, I've bought quite a bit from here but this was the first disappointing purchase.

Posting on Behalf of Glenda: Just finished this jacket from the free "Mariana" pattern. Made in heavy weight linen and I lined it following the tutorial instructions on the blog.

I used this beautiful, crisp fabric to back and border my quilt. I love the contrast in color. It was a breeze to work with this fabric. And my quilt is cozy and breathable at the same time! Oh the wonders of Fabric-Store llinens! I am hooked!!!
