Fabric : IL019 EMERALD Softened

The IL019 is a beautiful green, very similar to Ralph Lauren Hunter Green, more blue than yellow as greens go. The weight is perfect for clothing, bedding, tablecloths, napkins, you name it! I plan to make a gathered box spring cover, but who knows? I may have to wear this!

I used this fabric to make a kirtle for a costume. It is lightweight but not too light very soft against the skin, and the colour is a beautiful brilliant green similar to the light green found in some 14th century paintings.

Rustic Linen
Reviewer: Michelle
Fabric : 4C22 BLEACHED

I found this to be a slubby, rustic looking linen. Because of the slubs, I find it difficult to draw threads for hemstitching. However, it makes good rustic tablecloths and table decor items. It takes to large-scale crewel embroidery.

Fabric : IL030 BLEACHED

I used this lightweight, gauzy linen to make a mobcap and fichu for a costume. The items were nearly weightless and did not make me hot, as I had feared they might. I used YLI Heirloom thread in white, size 100 to hand-hem the items, and the stitches are really invisible. This would be a great fabric to combine with laces for collars, cuffs, and baby items. It would also be very effective for ruffles.

I have used this linen to make summer bedding items. For summer sheets and pillowcases it can´t be surpassed. It is easy to work with, sturdy and hard-wearing, and very comfortable against my skin. I made several summer "blankets" using a two-yard length, turning a narrow edge, and working a single crochet edge in pastel colors. This linen BREATHES and is very comfortable.

Fabric : IL019 ENGLISH ROSE Softened

I agree with the reviewer that this color is closer to a sort of rust/orange red than a pink. On my monitor the color appears to be more of a dusky rose. I ordered fabric before ordering a swatch of this color & while the color is pretty it is not what I was hoping for. I don´t know who names colors but it´s misleading to call this "rose."

Economical & versatile

Fabric : IL014 BLEACHED

Originally I bought yardage of IL014 to make Roman shades for my living room. I had some substantial-sized scraps which I dug out when I got bit by the tie-dye bug. I made napkins, dishcloths, and placemats! Great fun! I tried dishtowels, but the fabric, while absorbent, was not sufficiently dense. The towels got soaked too quickly, so I made them into placemats. . . then made more placemats! IL014 is loosely woven and rather coarse. It is soft and absorbent enough for napkins but I wouldn´t recommend it for bedding. It´s fairly translucent and would need to be lined or layered for clothing use.

Fabric : IL019 BLEACHED

IL019 takes dye beautifully and is just an all-around excellent fabric, being both versatile and economical. Sleeping under my new duvet cover, I just want to keep touching the fabric. It isn´t super-soft, but it has a pleasing texture that makes my skin happy! Somehow it feels better than plush synthetics.

Fabric : 1C64 BLEACHED

Received my first order of linen to make altar linens for our church. After washing it twice and drying, the linen was a dream to sew! Since I had never purchased linen on-line, I didn´t know what to expect. It is a quality fabric and I will be back as a repeat customer. Many thanks for your store. P.S. I showed one completed linen (purificator) to my pastor to see if he approved. He loved it! Good thing, I bought 15 yards. ;)

I ordered this fabric to make a working class 18th century shift, and it has been a dream to work with. I´d never sewn linen before, and it is just perfect for hand-sewing. It was wonderfully soft on arrival and it has only gotten softer with washing and use. There are very few slubs, but enough to make the piece still look "period." I´ll be ordering more colors for my petticoats soon!

Great Heavy Natural Linen
Reviewer: Patricia
Fabric : IL090 MIX NATURAL

I purchased this linen for an 18th century farmer´s style frock for my husband. It sewed up like a dream and he loves it! He looked great when we went to Fort Ticonderoga and Old Fort Niagara and will only look better as it is washed a few more times and gets that "aged" look. Great for hunting frocks with fringe because it is heavier than most and also good for bags, hats, etc. Thanks for this heavier weight!

Fabric : IL019 ROYAL PURPLE Softened

As of 7/26/08 the color in the picture here is a bit lighter than the actual fabric. I have contacted the website and they said they would update it. It is still a very nice color purple. Make sure you wash this at least 3 times in HOT water. This color ran like a stuck pig through 2 hot washes, although, I believe it was just extra color running out. Very nice color and I look forward to using it very soon!

Fabric : IL019 SILVER BLUE Softened

I wanted to make a striped petticoat for an 18th century polonaise gown with IL044-515 and I wanted the polonaise gown to be a matching blue. Silver blue matches the blue in that fabric almost perfectly. And after making 2 petticoats with linen I can´t wait to make the polonaise. Linen is so easy to sew with!

Fabric : IL020 KRISTA NATURAL Softened

I can´t get enough of Fabrics-store.com´s beautiful linen. Krista natural was purchased to make a 18th/Colonial shirt for my husband. It was the first 100% linen fabric I have ever worked with. It gathered beautifully and was easily finger pressed or iron pressed into place. I don´t think I´ll ever find a fabric as enjoyable to work with as linen. It made even the difficult parts of sewing easier!

Fabric : IL019 SUNSHINE Softened

I found this to be the same color yellow as your average set of Post-it-Notes. I made a 18th Century petticoat out of it (following the directions on the blog!). I can´t describe to you how lightweight and airy it is here in the SC heat. And it´s also so soft on my skin. I love it!

Striped Masterpiece
Reviewer: Melissa
Fabric : IL044 515

I love the colors and feel of this fabric! It´s striped with pale blue, pink, yellow, green, and cream. I bought this for an 18th century middle class petticoat. It´s gorgeous and feels so wonderfully light in the 90 degree weather here in SC. It would also be a beautiful table runner or place mat´s with IL019 in Silver Blue as a Table Cloth. Their blues match almost perfectly. However, you could use a color matching any of the stripes for the table cloth as well. I´m really thinking about ordering more for that table runner and for a contemporary dress.

Makes Great Linen Sheets
Reviewer: Martha
Fabric : IL077 BLEACHED

Cotton sheets will feel warm to the touch when the night just will not cool down. Back in 2004 I had slept on pure linen sheets at a friend´s house, bought in Europe--they were heavier than any available here in the US, but were absolutely luxurious. I made sure I weighed them before I left Baton Rouge. I found that IL077 was closest to the weight of that linen (but is not as open a weave), so I made some sheets for a single futon out of this fabric. It has moderate linting, washes easily in hot water with Ecos Ultra Free and Clear laundry soap and Ecover fabric softener. I tried other linen weights available on this site but none gave me the feel of those sheets of 2004 than IL077. Shrinkage was about 11% after 8 pre-washes and the width dropped to 57" after the first wash. Do not worry about ironing these sheets, most wrinkles will relax with this heavier weight linen. Besides, comfort will trump appearance when it comes to getting a good night´s sleep. Linen is the only thing worth sleeping on during those hot, humid summer nights without an air-conditioner, as it handles the 90 degrees at 10 pm equally as well as the 63 degrees at 4 am without waking you up. Too bad this doesn´t come in 95-100" widths for a double bed. If you can stand seams at the edges to add width, it could be used to make sheets for the double bed. Be sure to make pillowcases, too since linen feels much cooler than cotton on your head, too. Since pure linen sheet sets tend to start at about $300 per set online (and all advertise as light weight linen, none with this heavy a weight), this fabric is a bargain at about $50 for a twin set and <$100 for a double bed of any size. And linen will last and last and last. Just do not use chlorine bleach, because chlorine will break down natural fibers--best is an enzyme bleach (e.g. Biz) once in a while.

Probably not meant to be used for this but..It is GREAT!
Reviewer: Martha
Fabric : IL041 NATURAL

I made a nightgown, a simple shift, from a pattern for a shirtdress, minus the belt, no collar, short sleeves, added an inch to the width to be sure I could pull it over my head. It is the best fabric I have found for this purpose when you have to sleep through those hot, humid, summer nights. This one is probably better than the more tightly woven lighter linen fabrics that you see in manufactured linen sheets and blouses, since it is so loosely woven. I pre-washed it in hot water 7 times and in Ecos Ultra Free and Clear laundry soap (I NEVER use detergent) only for the last wash, shrinkage was about 9% in length, it dropped from 60" wide to 54" in the first wash (but can be ironed back to about 56"). This heavier linen tends to lose sharp wrinkles, making the fabric just look relaxed. It feels like it should be scratchy to feel (even with softener--it lints a great deal) but is so comfortable when you use a natural fabric softener such as Ecover. Linen is the only thing worth sleeping on. I slept on IL077 bleached white sheets on a single futon and fell in love with linen (the heavier linen) sheets--see my comments on that linen fabric. So I decided to ditch the cotton jersey nightgown for a linen nightgown and will never go back. What they say about linen is correct--warm in winter, cool in summer, so it keeps on working well as the house cools down through the night. I guess it works because it is so loosely woven and not tightly knit as jersey, but cotton woven sheets are just too hot in these summers. Maybe cotton only works well in icy cold refrigerated rooms.

Museum "Bed-hangings" Project

Fabric : IL090 MIX NATURAL Softened

Bought this fabric to complete our colonial "bed-hangings" project at the Josiah Dennis Manse Museum in Dennis, on Cape Cod. We have finished the crewel embroidery on the valence using fabric woven by one of our docents. The backing and the canopy fabrics are of donated antique linen, and this purchased fabric will be used for the curtains and headboard panel on our 1735 pencil post bed. The colors of all these fabrics blend perfectly! I´ll send a picture when we get the bed "finely dressed" for our June 21st opening.

Fabric : IL044 255

I used this linen to make an unlined jacket for my aunt. It has all the qualities we love in linen (holds a crease, nice drape, malleable, etc.), Additionally, the colors are SO pretty. It´s a yard-dye done in a combination of pale aqua with kind of a dark lavender (not a royal purple). The overall effect is cheerful yet classic, great for summer!

Fabric : IL020 BLEACHED Softened

This "softened" IL020 is a superb fabric. I have bought handkerchief weight linen from several other online stores, and although their product has been perfectly acceptable, fabric-store´s is better. It is woven with much finer threads than you usually see, so the washed and dried linen winds up being closer to good shirtweight fabric--nothing rustic about it. In addition, it seems to have a longer staple, in that almost no lint or fuzz came out when I treated it to two vigorous machine wash and dry sessions before working with it. Finally, fabric-store´s shipping speed is unbelievably fast: I ordered on Monday; my package arrived on Wednesday! Hard to beat that. I´ll be buying here again, and will post a positive report on a couple of sewing bulletin boards where I´m a member.

It may be my monitor, but in general all fabrics I´ve ordered from fabrics-store.com are a shade lighter than photographed. The fuscia pink is more a hot pink. The browner tones are more avocado and harvest gold or mustard. FYI. Very much like the photo of a previous customer´s project using this as a blouse.

Fabric : IL019 ROYAL PURPLE Softened

I matched this with the yarn dye light purple and white linen IL044-256. It makes a wonderful contrast of dark and light. It´s definitely a grape - not a wine or blue purple. It´s also an elegant "adult" purple in my opinion. It doesn´t scream elementary school crayon purple... It´s not too stiff nor too soft.

Reviewer: Theresa
Fabric : IL044 256

I was excited to see this fabric up close- and it did not disappoint. It has a a wonderful weave and texture- but is surprisingly smooth. There are the typical inconsistencies in a weave, which add to the interest and texture: gatherings and catches of concentrated purple and white- but it is an overall tight weave leaving it to seem almost as if the fabric was pressed and lightly starched! Love it. The actual color is more pale lavender overall than purple (at least on my PC monitor the swatch seems more of a darker purple shade.) This is in no way a detraction- I´d just say the white is a more dominant color of the two in this weave, rather than the purple.

Fabric : IL019 ROYAL PURPLE Softened

Last Spring I wrote an email requesting that you stock a good royal purple. I admit I wasn´t confident so prepared to goad my local sewing/costuming friends into writing as well. That same day you sent a reply asking if I had a swatch of the desired color. I mailed it out and a week later you told me that you´d forward it to the dye house, and would try. Thank you! thank you! Thank you so much for providing a source for this beautiful vibrant hue. It´s been so difficult to find any royal purple linen. I bought some the first week you had it available. It´s held it´s color through 2 hot(nuclear) pre-washes and it´s time in the dryer only made it softer. It loses about 7% in the pre-shrinking so folk should remember that when ordering. It´s ready to cut...I can´t wait. It´s also wonderfully compatible with your other colors. For re-enactment purposes, it goes so well with the Autumn Gold IL019. Thank you again for your responsive attention. It´s the most sterling example of your excellent customer service. You´re my favorite shop, and the first place I look to or recommend to my friends. Keep up the great work

Fabric : IL019 VINEYARD GREEN Softened

I wanted to make some of the loose, comfortable styles in linen by Esk*nder and Zor*n that go for rather too high a price. I also wanted a high quality of construction and to flatter my short waisted figure, in colors I like. After washing, tumble drying several times, I cut out the vineyard green (color exact on my monitor)for a long, sleeveless tunic and the ginger in flat-front one-seams and a SW San Diego Jacket. Wow! I was expecting a softer hand due to the treatment and the washing, but it has a drape unlike any linen I have ever worn. It was beautiful to sew and press. It does not stand out stiffly away from my body adding pounds. Easy care (no ironing) as I took extra care with seams and hems. This is the best wardrobe for the high desert. Thrilled.

The color is a bit less bright than what the picture displays, but I must say I prefer the actual color to that on the screen. Its sort of a dark periwinkle. Its exceptionally flowy, but not as soft as I imagined, but thats because I am disillusioned and was envisioning fleece kind of soft rather than linen kind of soft. This is fantastic fabric, and Im definitely going to buy more fabric from here! If only I had the right color of thread to go with it...

I just made a blouse out of this fabric, and I love the color. Its a cross-weave with a kelly green thread running one direction, and and a pale blue thread running the other direction, so the overall effect is kind of a muted turquoise, or perhaps muted teal. If you look at a spool of Coats & Clark thread in the \"Bahama\" color, it blends perfectly. I did my topstitching in a pale seafoam green color, so it would show up, and then I used the Bahama thread for the buttonholes and hand stitching, and the thread just practically disappears, it blends so well.

I made a pair of pants out of this 6-ounce linen (picture posted). I washed and dried it twice before cutting out my pattern. I made a wide-leg pair of pants (Simplicity 3880), and the linen drapes beautifully. The color is kind of a medium navy color, not so dark as to look black. In fact, its about the color of mid-range denim. Fabrics-store.com ALWAYS gives absolutely the BEST service of all the online fabric stores from which I order. Fabric : IL020 BLEACHED

This linen is fairly slubby, but its bright white and light to medium in hand at a great price! Its pretty soft on the skin once washed, it continues to get softer. It appears to be a chinese linen as it has a short fiber length, but the price is right!! I have used this for many an italian chemise, hats, linings, sleeves and more. At this price, its not too heavy but not heavy enough for breeches, but it would be ok, for braies (underwear) and any long wearing linen garment. I havent tried dying it just yet, be sure to get a \"reactive\" dye for plant fibers if you do.

I adore the color, the screen image is close enough to what I got, a slightly earthy red. The weave isnt very dense, might need to line it with something else. (Good for the money, though.) I like the beautifully slubby texture for peasant cloth better than the finer IL081 6oz terracota (which is pumpkin colored, by the way.) However, if you are making garb for upper middle class or nobility, this linen is too coarse for your needs. I will definately be buying more of this for a kirtle or a skirt, and probably other colors in this weight (either the khaki or merlot) for my boyfriends garb, he loves the texture too.

Fabric : IL019 BLUE BONNET Softened

I just finished the embroidery on a late-Roman-period palla (large rectangular shawl) made from this fabric, and I loved working with it. The hand of the fabric has just the right amount of softness, I love the medium indigo-blue color, and it is very easy to embroider. The only problem -- and it was a small one -- was that the selvedge was somewhat rough along the inner edge and had to be trimmed off, and the fabric hemmed there instead of leaving the selvedge in place as Id planned. Nevertheless, I will definitely be using this fabric for more reenactment clothing projects.

Fabric : IS003 PISTACHIO Softened

I ordered this fabric with hesitation, because it is a linen and cotton blend. I had ordered other fabrics from this site, but they were straight linen. I was concerned that the texture of the blend may not match the texture of the linen. However, I ordered it anyway because the color was perfect for the application I needed. I neednt have worried. This is a beautiful fabric with a lovely hand. Its texture is exactly like the straight linens I ordered. Its a bit heavier than the others, but just to be more opaque. I am very happy with my purchase.

WOW!! This is a gorgeous fabric with a wonderful texture. I am using it to make draperies, and it hangs beautifully on the rod. Good interlining
Reviewer: Kimiko
Fabric : 4C22 NATURAL

I used this fabric to interline my husbands renaissance doublet. Its weight worked very well for the job, and it wasnt stiff. I used a nicer white linen (IL019) for the lining. Because both were linen, his doublet is comfortable to wear, even with the outer layer being black cotton velveteen. The fabric is a bit slubby, but it is a good weight and works well for what I used it for. If you need a stiffer linen, I would look for a different heavy linen.

This is a fairly tightly woven jacquard weave cotton that has very little raveling as youre working with it. The color in person (at least compared to the picture on my PC) is more of a pink-beige, or a pinkish mauve. Its a beautiful color, even prettier than I expected. The fabric has nice body and a slight sheen. (I washed and dried it before cutting.)

Fabric : IL006 PINK 310

This fabric is beautiful, even more so in person than in the photograph. It almost has a sheen to it. The photograph gives a good representation of the color. It is a beautiful suit weight jacquard weave in muted pink and natural. One thing that I really like about it (besides the weight) is that you can use either side of the fabric, depending on whether you want more of the natural color to show, or more of the pink.

this is a beautiful yarn dye. I used it to make a prayer shawl combined with another darker green yarn dye fabric that had a similar light yellow threads in it and appliqud on the natural linen and it went beautifully with embroidery colors of sun yellow, royal blue and black threads. Depending on what angle you look at it, it slightly gives an illusion of shimmering the green vs the yellow threads.. the swatch online looks very accurate to the actual fabric I received.

I successfully used it to make a pioneer reenactor dress (1845 Godeys) for my daughter. I made it in brick pink which seems to be no longer available. What a beautiful color. IL019 fabric sews easily. It holds pleats well. It is suitable for dresses, blouses, and skirts. It is sheer enough that a slip may be necessary. I would hesitate to make it into a suit, but I could see making a casual summer jacket from it. It is somewhat light for pants unless lined or using a darker color, but I prefer a heavier fabric (6 oz plus) for bottom weights. I will buy this again.

Ive been looking in fabric stores for this perfect, blue-based red for about 8 years. Most well meaning shop tenders would try to tell me that Linen just didnt come in that shade of red, it wouldnt take. After several not-quite successful attempts to dye my own, I was beginning to believe them. I saw the listing on Fabrics-store.com months ago and figured it couldnt be accurate. I sent for a swatch, and it WAS. It took me a few weeks to get my fun money accrued before I was ready to order. They sold out before I could buy it. Aaauuughh!! I waited. And here it is! I jumped on it. It arrived yesterday! Its glorious! Its pretty firm with a smooth hand and softens up considerably when you wash it. I wouldnt care if it didnt soften at all--its all about that COLOR. Thank you so much!

It has a few too many slubs in it for my taste, and although Ive laundered the dress I made several times, its still a bit on the stiff and rough side. For an outer dress, thats fine; but I regret the underdress I made out of it. :) The price, of course, makes up for the few issues I have!

Dense weave, but soft

Fabric : Narva NATURAL Laundered

This is a lovely fabric, but be warned: it is quite soft, so it isnt appropriate if you want a stiff fabric. The weave is dense enough so that you cant see through it, but it has a very soft drape (partly because of the pre-laundering, partly due to the twill weave). It dyes up wonderfully (I scoured it before dyeing, incidently). Great for outer garments--gowns, skirts, etc.

What Pattern Should I Choose

Fabric : IS003 LAVENDER 77022

I received my lavander print and lavander solid material and I am in a quandry as to wich pattern I want to use, Skirt and Jacket, Dress and Jacket, Slacks and Jacket. All of these are jumping arround in my head like little sugar plumbs, causing me to wish I had ordered more material (which I may just do)so I can make all of them. I showed my printouts of my favorites to the fabrics dept. manager of a major store, who I might add is an avid seamstress, and she was awed. I gave her this website address. Hope you get to see her here soon.

I have not yet ordered any fabric, although I have ordered some samples of some very interesting material. I am writing to tell you what a wonderful website you have. I have been up all night going through hundreds of sites and yours is among the best. Also, one of the few I entered on my favorites list. Since I am just begining to set up my custom clothing line (Your Busy Buddy Fasions) I am looking forward to doing business with your company. I would, also, like to add a link to your site on my website for my customers to shop for thier material. I am in the process of putting my site together. Thank You Sandra Corey

I made a bedspread with this fabric, and it is gorgeous - and luxurious! And I do not fold it back at night - I sleep with it as a cover and it feels so good. It has got some weight which I like and keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It washes well and is amazingly wrinkle resistant.

I just received my first order today. I bought this fabric just to check out the quality and customer service....everything is great. I can\'t wait to start sewing and place my second order!!!! (Oh, I also received my samples today as well. Great presentation! I thought they would be shipped, in an envelope, crumpled together...not the case! Great job!)

irridescent linen
Reviewer: Claire
Fabric : IL044 425

This fabric is a different color in each direction of the weave, dark blue in one and bright green in the other. This gives it an almost irridescent quality though without the shine of a satin. At a distance it has a kind of a teal sheen and appears a beautiful peacock color. I love it. It is exactly what I wanted. It is not quite as dark as the picture indicates.

Disapointed
Reviewer: Anonimus
Fabric : IL023 NATURAL 092

This fabric was a great disapointent. It is very open weave and very coarse, and not like other similar weight fabric that I have ordered. It pills and fluffs, even after 5 washings, and looks like it will continue to do so. It is completely unusable. I was suprised since every other fabric I have ordered from this store has been excellent.

Ultimate versatility and value
Reviewer: Catherine
Fabric : IL019 BLEACHED

This is the fourth time I\'ve re-ordered this fabric this summer. This time, I\'m ordering a 20-yard bolt. I wash this fabric, then dye it using procion MX fabric dyes. The fabric is strong, takes color beautifully, and takes a lot of processing while still maintaining its soft hand. It washes to a soft rumpled look that I make into dresses, blouses, jackets and pants. All this for less than $6 a yard, and it\'s 59 inches wide too! This is my ultimate value/versatility fabric! I LOVE THIS FABRIC!

Fabric : IL020 BLEACHED

I really like this for my summer 18thC shift, and plan to make my early 19thC shifts from it as well, as the linen breathes better than cotton. Great price on a lovely sheer linen. Excellent smooth selvedge, makes great caps too!

IL020 is lightweight 100% linen. It is ideal for all of your sheer applications and is a see-through marvel. Regardless of its use, we are sure that this is by far the best priced lightweight 100% linen you will ever come across.
